The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace juggernaut rolled on for Dynamic Syndications Owners on Saturday when the powerhouse stable took the covers off our promising miler + prospect in 3yo Colt LUGH (Snitzel x Marcia Proba) over a foundation race distance of 1200m at Kembla Grange.
LUGH won Race 5 the Jessica Hull CG&E Maiden Plate over 1200m and in the process became our seventh (7th) win for the month.
LUGH put a smile on the dial of his winning connections with a hard-fought victory as it was a two-horse war down the length of the long Kembla straight.
LUGH (56.5kg)($21) defeated Rapido (56.5kg)($4.0) by 0.1 length with 1.4 lengths to Mickey's Medal (56.5kg)($5.50) and Primo (56.5kg)($2.90) 1.5 lengths in 4th spot.
LUGH who was ridden by Christian Reith for the Maher/Eustace Team our Dynamic galloper, ran 1:11.08 (600m 33.69).
Hailing from a stout female family, winning a 1200m race was a dream but also unexpected as every indication had been that he wants 1600m to get into a rhythm that suits his style.
Yet on raceday he put those observations aside and was bang on the bunny from the time the barriers crashed back until the moment the camera flashed.
He had put the writing on the wall with a flashing lights trial at Rosehill on 11 August when storming home from back at the tail of the field.
We had anticipated they may have run along quickly in this event, and on his trials, he may have struggled to keep up. So, we advised Christian Reith we were happy to see LUGH settle further back from the outside draw and work home building a nice foundation and experience for bigger things to come over a trip.
However, nobody told LUGH and he was going to have none of that conservative racing pattern.
So as the gates crashed back LUGH flew the lids and bang – he landed eyeballing the leaders, with 4 across the track and LUGH the widest due to his poor barrier and wanting to go faster. The pace was on early as the field were sorting out their positions and Christian looked over his shoulder and couldn’t see any chance from where the horse was in transit, about getting back with cover. So as eventual runner-up Rapido worked across to land on the paint, with third placegetter Mickey’s Medal at its girth, LUGH came across and sat eyeballing Mickey’s Medal three-deep.
At this point passing the 1000m marker, Rapido upped the ante to burn Mickey’s Medal who dropped off the speed battle and Christian allowed LUGH his head and slipped a length and a half clear into second position, outside Rapido as Mickey’s Medal took the trail.
LUGH now wanted to keep running and worked three-quarters of a length in front of Rapido, with Christian under a tight hold to preserve LUGH’s energy as they passed the 800 marker.
LUGH settled into his rhythm as Rapido pushed up to control the tempo and Christian had LUGH sitting a neck back on the outside of the leader passing the 600m.
From the 600m into the home turn and then balancing for the run home at the 400m mark, Rapido pulled a length in front and appeared full of running as those chasing were giving their all.
LUGH worked hard and he took until the 100m to wrestle back a narrow lead.
However, Rapido would not submit, and these two horses strived stride-by-stride and in an exciting heads-up / heads-down finish, LUGH stuck his nose in front.
