Our Richard and Will Freedman trained honest 4YO Mare HORIZONS (The Autumn Sun / Sabanci) was back in the winner’s circle at Canterbury on Wednesday having won Race 5 the HELLBENT YEARLINGS HANDICAP over 1900m, but she had to do it the hard way.

HORIZONS “WON IT” on the Track and “WON IT” again in the Stewards Room when connections successfully defended the win, when a protest of second verse first was quickly dismissed.

HORIZONS (4yo m The Autumn Sun / Sabanci) ($3) trained by Richard & Will Freedman and ridden by Adam Hyeronimus carried 59.0kgs in defeating INSPIRED LEGEND (3yo g Dundeel / Abbey Marie) ($14) trained by Les Bridge and ridden by Mitchell Bell carrying 55.5 kgs by the barest of margins 0.01 length with third place to PLACID PEARL (4yo m D'argento / South Pearl) ($2.70 fav) trained by Matthew Smith and ridden by Zac Lloyd carrying 58.5kgs by 1.23 lengths.
In what was a beautiful ride by Adam Hyeronimus, where he judged the race to perfection, leading throughout and getting her peers off the bit with superb tactical pace.
When the camera flashed there was the narrowest of margins in the result, but when the photo was magnified there was enough to define a clear margin in favour of HORIZONS.
HORIZONS was presented to the parade ring in fantastic order, fit, well and ready to perform. She had a real gleam to her coat and looked a horse on top of her game.

HORIZONS pre-race
However, she needed all of that plus a well-timed, clever ride by Adam to ensure our mare was able to fend off her male challenger Inspired Legend who had a 3.5kg pull in the weights, a sex advantage and an easier run in transit where tracking HORIZONS throughout.

At no time did the runner-up hit the front, and it was a statement of strength and a will to win that stood out in the end.

Over the final 100m the runner-up laid-in under pressure and came to HORIZONS but then Inspired Legend began to roll out at the 50m.
.jpg)

When that began to unfold, HORIZONS followed it out and with about 25m to go, both runners bushed hindquarter ever so slightly, however the rider of the runner-up never stopped riding whilst Adam could feel HORIZONS was starting to drift out so stopped his course and straightened her up under hands and heels, costing HORIZONS momentum and balance.

The runner-up had the length of the straight to catch HORIZONS and couldn’t get past, despite the weight and sex advantage, and the stewards quickly dismissed the protest.

HORIZONS defeats subsequent Gr1 Winner ATTICA at Kembla
Second-up she defeated ATTICA over 1500m at Kembla with the runner-up then franking that form with a Stakes Win in the Dulcify and a Group 1 win in the Spring Champion.
Third-up she was poorly ridden and had no luck when disappointing again over 1500m in a low grade race at Hawkesbury which left connections scratching our heads.
We then went to Randwick fourth-up over 1800m on a Saturday finishing third to Oceanfront and Natoya but we felt disappointed that the tempo didn’t suit our mare when she was ridden far to quickly in front by the apprentice, and that left her an easy target for the chasers. However, she fought hard.
Then fifth-up over 1900m she won this event at Canterbury showing courage under fire.
For the prep she has banked $77,700.
