The
2016-17 Hong Kong racing season concluded at Sha Tin last Sunday and given the significance of Hong Kong to Australian racing and breeding because of the sale of yearlings and tried horses, it's vital to stay abreast of the trends in HK Racing.
The Leading Sire in Hong Kong for 2016-17 by both WINNERS & WINS was
Fastnet Rock
Coolmore Studs Champion Sire FASTNET ROCK who finished the year with
15 Individual Winners who Won 27 Races.
In the Runner-up position for both WINNERS (13) & WINS (24) was EXCEED AND EXCEL.
The Leading Sire in Hong Kong for 2016-17 by Earnings was HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR with HKD $40.8m who was assisted by his son
Gentlemen Only who won HKD $21.57m.
In the Runner-up position was FASTNET ROCK with HKD $34.3m.
The Hong Kong racing scene is a challenging environment dominated by the males of the breed. Colts (almost all become geldings), must survive and then thrive in a pressure-cooker location and to do so, a horse needs good conformation, a strong constitution and the right mental attitude.
Shortcomings in these areas are going to make it extremely difficult for a horse to succeed and in a racing centre where longevity and the ability to front up season after season is utmost to owners and trainers, qualities such as soundness and temperament are the foundation stones.
Holy Roman Emperor is becoming a sire legend in Hong Kong having finished runner-up Champion Sire in the past two seasons after winning the title of Champion Sire in 2014.
Holy Roman Emperor is a son of Danehill and has made his mark with tough Group 1 winners all over the world, but especially in Hong Kong where his offspring thrive. His progeny have included 2014 HK Horse of the Year Designs on Rome as well as top class sprinters and milers including Beauty Only, who was awarded Champion HK Miler of 2017. Whilst he is an average sire in Australia, he is royalty in Hong Kong.
Owned by Coolmore Stud, Holy Roman Emperor stands under arrangement at Aquis Farm at a fee of $9,900.
Also in the Hong Kong Top 10 Sires list and whom will be at stud in Australia this spring are Starcraft, Sebring and I Am Invincible.
Other well-known Australian sires just outside the Top 10 included: Medaglia D'Oro, Mossman and Hinchinbrook.
Danehill
Again DANEHILL as a Sire of Sires leads the way with four (4) of his sons in the Top 10: FASTNET ROCK, EXCEED AND EXCEL, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR and DYLAN THOMAS.
Dynamic Syndications are currently promoting a super son of FASTNET ROCK from TEMPLE OF PEACE - a multiple Stakes Placed racemare and Dam of Australian Champion 3yo WHOBEGOTYOU.
