An insatiable thirst for quality from a
first-class buying bench which had flocked to the Gold Coast, led to the
2021 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale smashing previous benchmarks with records across the board.
In a
HOT MARKET driven by the
FOMO Effect (Fear Of Missing Out), due to many trainers and owners being left short of stock this year off the
rapidly rising values of thoroughbreds through the yearling salering, resulting in many yearling buyers being priced out of the market.
Those
buyers attention turned to securing weanlings in the hope they could get set for stock at more realistic levels, whilst t
hey clashed head on with the professional
pinhook operators, the horsemen and horsewomen that play the highly volatile, high risk - high return game of buy weanlings in an attempt to fix obvious issues and grow them out and then sell them as yearlings in the hope of making a profit.
These two stand-alone groups also
collided against breeding operations who felt that they needed additional stock to take to market in 2022.
This was the
perfect storm for mushrooming growth in prices, a traditionally
sure-fire early barometer of what will flow into the
2022 Yearling Sales.
The short answer to this conundrum is that quality horses could soon become "out of the reach" of the traditional racehorse buyer next year, and in the years to come.
The Two Day sale recorded a record average was over $105,000 and a clearance rate at 89 per cent. The sale gross is also a record, over $31.6 million.
A review of the second day saw Lot 339 a son of Yarraman Park Stud's champion sire
e,
I Am Invincible the first foal of former star racemare Ellicazoom top the session at
$625,000.
After buying Day 1's top seller and the overall sale topper for
$1 million, leading trainer
Ciaron Maher swept up another colt, this time, the first foal of Fundamentalist by
Zoustar for
$560,000.
The colt was presented as Lot 362 and attracted plenty of interest before the gavel fell on Maher's bid.
"He's out of a really tough race mare," Maher pointed out.
"She (Fundamentalist) is a daughter of Not a Single Doubt - and Zoustar is absolutely flying at the moment," Maher summed up.
Two other youngsters
sold for over half a million dollars - Woodside Park Stud's
Written Tycoon-Hell or Highwater colt for
$510,000 and just minutes later Coolmore Stud's
Frankel-Iiex Excelsa filly for
$530,000.
The leading vendor by gross was
Shadwell Stud Australasia ($5.435 million for 20 sold) while
Gilgai Farm was leading vendor by average ($312,500 for 8 sold).
With the sale topper on both days, it was no surprise to see
I Am Invincible clinch the leading sire by average (3 or more sold) at
$492,857.
Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said
"We are delighted with the results."
“It's a sensational clearance rate of 89 per cent and an average of well over $100,000 and a gross of almost $32 million."
"The results have exceeded our expectations going in. The market was buoyant from start to finish."
"
You'd like to think that vendors would keep bringing good horses which will give buyers more confidence to support the Weanling Sale."
"With graduates of this sale including the likes of Stay Inside, Pierro and Zoustar - the sale needs to be on everyone's calendar - you need to be here and, in the market, and take the opportunities as they arise."
Bowditch added,
"We are really excited, the floats are starting to arrive with all these beautiful mares to sell next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday."
"It's a phenomenal (mares) catalogue and I can't wait until 10am on Tuesday morning."
The
big mover in the fashion trend for professional buyers was the
incredible demand for the progeny of
ZOUSTAR.

ZOUSTAR is the sire that the professionals want.
Whilst I Am Invincible and Snitzel still lead the way, they are getting older season by season but the trending data is for the
