FOXWEDGE (Fastnet Rock / Forest Native) the highly promising first crop sire standing at
NEWGATE FARM, produced his first Stakes Class horse on Thursday when promising
2yo debutante filly AGHNA (Foxwedge / Moonboat) rattled home for an eye-catching 3rd in the $100,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2yo Classic – A Listed Race held under Set Weights conditions.
The race was won by the odds-on $1.28 favourite
CAPITALIST - a 2yo colt by Written Tycoon who
smashed the race record running 1:03.23 (last 600m 34.68). CAPITALIST defeated his stablemate NICCOLANCE another 2yo colt by Nicconi who had the run of the race, with
AGHNA (by Foxwedge) being the first filly home in third position.
CAPITALIST leading into this event was the pre-market favourite for both the Magic Millions and Golden Slipper and subsequently his price in both events has significantly shortened.
He certainly was impressive when jumping well and taking a forward position in the race. There were no excuses for Niccolance who was outclassed by his stablemate but there were plenty of excuses for the debutant filly AGHNA who drew wide in 8 of 9 and was hampered after the jump, when the horse to her outside put on a bucking display as its saddle slipped, causing
AGHAN to lose its position and over react, allowing the winner and placegetter to steal a break on the filly which to her credit she gallantly tried to reel in over the concluding stages.
AGHAN looks a quality filly in the making and with this race experience under her belt and back to her own sex, she looks that she will be a very nice prospect for her owners and trainer.
Importantly,
AGHAN has now added the much prized Black Type placing to her pedigree increasing her commercial value for stud duties after racetrack retirement. Placed to advantage,
AGHNA could be winning at stakes level in the run into the Golden Slipper.

JESMOND LASS is the Dam of both CANNY LASS (Bletchingly) and her half-sister TAARECK (Bluebird).
TAARECK is the 3rd Dam of AGHNA whilst CANNY LASS is the 3rd Dam of our FOXWEDGE / DE LAGO LASS Filly.
Even more specific to the breeding of
both AGHAN and our FOXWEDGE / DE LAGO LASS Filly is the fact that AGHAN is a daughter of
MOONBOAT who is by
ENCOSTA DE LAGO whilst our filly is a daughter of
DE LAGO LASS who is also by
ENCOSTA DE LAGO.
So we certainly are delighted to see the theory working for the cross of
FOXWEDGE over ENCOSTA DE LAGO mares, as it has produced FOXWEDGE’s first horse to earn BLACK-TYPE and
with BOTH sharing JESMOND LASS as their 4th DAM.
Knowing how well our own filly has progressed through early training, it heartens us to believe the ability she is showing has been matched equally by athleticism and genetics.
We only have a few shares remaining in our filly to complete the ownership team and with the advancement of the pedigree this afternoon by the performance of
AGHNA, she won’t last long now.
