There are
73 Second Crop sires at Stud in Australia and the data coming through is
intriguing.
The latest stats highlight some sires
flying under the radar doing a wonderful job, punching well above their weight division
Forget prizemoney as a determining factor because if a stallion flukes a good one, this
distorts and skewer’s the true success (
or failure) of a young sire whose progeny may not have had the same luxury of lobbing into a leading stable as compared to the others.
We like to use
Total Number of Winners as a
Key Performance Indicator along with
Strike Rate Percentage of Winners to Runners. This puts the focus on success over marketing and hype.
With
6 weeks of the current season remaining we have a true picture of the success of stallions in the market and which sire to keep buying their progeny and which to avoid.

It’s interesting statistical data.
There are stallions on this list that achieve early coming 2yo and 3yo types (
Capitalist and Shalaa) that have a higher number of starters therefore winners compared to sire’s whose progeny will get better with age and distance (
Astern and American Pharoah).
The Team at Dynamic Syndications purchased six yearlings this year by Second Crop Sires and it has proven to be a
correct formula, gaining
high quality yearlings by some
“sleeping” sires who now
represent wonderful value for money in a strengthening bloodstock market as their progeny are catching up.
CAPITALIST
SHALAA
If you want early coming sires for sprint races
CAPITALIST and SHALAA stand outs.
ASTERN
AMERICAN PHAROAH
If you want Blue Riband types that run in the Classic races, then
ASTERN and AMERICAN PHAROAH are on the rise.
EXTREME CHOICE
When you take
Extreme Choice out of the equation because his progeny that have four legs and a head pointing in the same direction at a
$275,000 service fee you can’t afford to buy them unless you have an oil rig in the backyard.
The best value for money sire by a long way is
Astern. Off an
$11,000 Service Fee he is punching way above his weigh division especially when you consider overall, he would have covered less a standard of mares at that price point.
American Pharoah is the biggest sleeper based upon the high-quality mares he covered. They take a little time, but those black type mares will bring his progeny to the fore as late 3yos and their 4yo year will be exciting.
We purchased 6 yearlings by Second Crop Sires, and it has proven to be successful sires we have chosen. They are:
