CORNICHE by Fastnet Rock is a homebred colt for Godolphin, whose previous win was last season when defeating Golden Slipper winner Shinzo in the Gr2 ATC Skyline Stakes however he was well in commission on Saturday in the in the Gr3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) (transferred to the Sunshine Coast) and scored decisively under an expert ride from James McDonald.
CORNICHE flew home to score in Gr3 Gold Coast Guineas
Thereabouts without winning in recent runs, the James Cummings trained colt was a close fourth at his most recent effort in the Gr2 ATC Arrowfield Sprint behind Gr1 winning filly Joliestar and was facing a significant drop-in class for this event.
He finished with a flurry, dashing between runners to claim a half-length win and advance his overall record to nine starts for two wins and five placings with prizemoney now passing $440,000.
James McDonald said, “He took a while to get through his gears, but he showed good tenacity late to come through the gap and fight to the end, so it was a good effort.”
Corniche is also a half-brother to dual Gr3 winner Heresy from Gr2 VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner Montsegur, who comes from the family of Fastnet Rock’s Gr1 winning son Merchant Navy and Gr1 winners Bonaria and Joliestar.
A three-quarter sister to Gr1 WATC Winterbottom Stakes winner Paulele (and a half-sister to Gr3 ATC Canonbury Stakes-winner Tessera, Montsegur has had six winners from seven to race. Montsegur had a colt by Street Boss (USA) last spring and is now in foal to Anamoe.
Corniche’s sire Fastnet Rock has recently been retired from stud duty at Coolmore and is poised to be Australia’s Champion Broodmare Sire for the first time this season.
FASTNET ROCK is having another terrific season having sired 6 Stakes Winners and 4 Stakes Placegetters to date.

FASTNET ROCK - Champion Sire
Only a handful of progeny by FASTNET ROCK are available to define his legacy.
The Team at Dynamic Syndications being aware of his fertility issues and the brilliance of his progeny over his years at stud, were keen to purchase one of his few colts available for sale this year.
We struck at the MAGIC MILLIONS when we purchased his son from the mare TANTALUS (by Savabeel).
