The
first 2yo trials for Sydney this season took place at Randwick on Tuesday morning with two heats over 735m.
Both heats were won by the progeny of
first season sires.
The quickest of the two heats was won by an
EXTREME CHOICE Filly named
Avaricious, who showed speed from a wide gate to lead and when asked to keep going by Jay Ford got clear of her rival Medad (by Maurice) to win by a length and a half in 43.36 seconds.
A $200,000
Magic Millions purchase bred by China Horse Club and offered under the Sledmere Stud draft, Avaricious is a half-sister to smart 3yo Cultural Amnesia.
Avaricious is the second foal of Zenon, a metro winning half-sister by Super Saver (USA) to stakes-winner I Have No Fear from Gr2 winner Countess Christie, both of those stakes-winners having been successful at two.
EXTREME CHOICE
Newgate Farm’s Extreme Choice was a brilliant two year-old winning the Gr1 MRC Blue Diamond Stakes and training on to win the Gr1 MVRC Moir Stakes at three, but fertility issues resulted in a first crop of
just 48 two year-olds to run for him this season.
This is
the second 2yo trial winner by the hot young sire after Extreme Choice sired a stylish trial winner in New Zealand at Te Teko last Thursday with an unnamed two-year-old colt trained by Jamie Richards also showing abundant natural pace. He jumped smartly to lead and although green around the turn, travelled strongly to the line to win his 640m heat by the best part of a length.
Extreme Choice also had another runner at the Randwick trials on Tuesday morning when Chameleon Choice looked to have run third in the first 2yo heat of the morning but was officially pipped on the post to be placed fourth. He wasn’t sent out to break records being given a soft, educational run.
So, with 3 horses to have trialled from such a small foal crop and having posted 2 slick winners and a runner that ran 4th there is little doubt that Extreme Choice progeny look to be a precocious breed, just like their sire.
Also at the trials,
Arrowfield Stud’s Japanese superstar racehorse Maurice (Jpn) sired the runner-up to Avaricious named Medad whilst he also sired the winner of the first 2yo heat of the morning when
I Love Lucy mustered speed from an inside draw to lead all the way and win in 44.07. She proved too slick for Little Miss Magic (Written Tycoon) winning by the best part of a length with Flying Artie colt Schwarzenegger pipping Chameleon Choice for third.
A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Arrowfield draft, I Love Lucy is the second foal of Flying Spur mare Lustrous, a half-sister to Gr1 placed Silk Pins and to the dam of Gr2 winner Gypsy Diamond.
The Japanese Horse of the Year in 2015, Maurice has his first crop of Japanese bred two-year-olds now running and has already sired nine (9) winners.
