The
first Queensland two-year-old race of the season was run on Saturday at Toowoomba and
first season sires were always predicted to play a big role in the
$75,000 Pat O'Shea Plate (1000m) and so it played out, with
Newgate Farm’s MENARI siring highly promising filly
Menari Magic to beat Mishani Warfare, a gelding by
Aquis Farm’s The Mission.
Menari Magic and Mishani Warfare fight out the finish
Trained by Paul Butterworth,
Menari Magic was second in
two Doomben 2yo trials coming into this race and ran right up to that form.
She raced up on the pace and was very strong to the line, repelling the challenge of the runner-up to win by a short neck.
Paul Buttterworth said.
“She’ll go to the paddock now and then we’ll look at the Magic Millions.”
“We always thought she was an early horse and she’s had no trouble with her shins but was muscle sore after her first trial. She came out of the second trial much better, and I knew she’d be strong at the finish today.”
A Magic Millions Book 2 purchase for her trainer,
Menari Magic is the first winner and final foal from Ladore Tantrums, an unraced Commands mare, whose grand-dam is stakes-winner Destruct.
A dark bay with a prominent blaze,
Menari Magic is the
first runner for fertility troubled Menari, a Group 2 winning son of Snitzel.
Menari had a first crop of only 19 live two-year-olds, but only 5 have been named to date.

Chatting with our trainers, what we
know is both the
Waterhouse / Bott Stable and the Ciaron Maher Stable have big impressions of their
Menari’s.
We certainly suggest to
Black-Book both those names for the early 2yo races.
We see it happen many times, stallions with
significant fertility issues have
well above average progeny.
To achieve a
winner in the
first 2yo race of the year in Queensland plus a
runner-up at the
Randwick Official 2yo Trials is a
huge result for any
first crop sire but more so for a sire with just
5 named 2yo’s.
Sadly, from his second crop the fertility stats are not much better. There are only
23 live foals recorded which only a handful will potentially be available at the 2022 yearling sales.
Last season stats are tragic. He covered only
25 mares, just
4 mares went into foal and sadly
two of those mares slipped.
So, his
Total Crop from the 2020 season is just
2 live foals, both are fillies.
Do you remember MENARI “the Ferrari” as a racehorse?
By SNITZEL from ISURAVA, an early injury to his near fore suspensory curtailed his brilliant racing career but he was an
elite 2yo and 3yo speed horse, trained by
Gerald Ryan.
