First Season Sire WANDJINA Set For Huge 2019

With a review of the promising First Crop 2yo sires making an impact, there is little doubt the sire that’s set to explode over the coming months is Snitzel’s Gr1 Winning son - WANDJINA.

WANDJINA - First Crop Sire

It’s an interesting evaluation of his promise as a sire when we look at what his progeny have done to date.

WANDJINA’s progeny are showing class but unexpectedly, they’re showing precocity and as his 2yo’s have only competed against the cream of the 2yo crop.

Nobody amongst the professional buyers truly believed WANDJINA would be or could be a sire of precocious 2yo types. Every astute judge has them slotted into the system to be 3yo’s that will run strongly at 1400m to 1600m.

What has unveiled is something altogether different.

WANDJINA has been represented by six (6) 2yo runners to date, something never dreamed about for this sire, to have pre-Christmas 2yo’s.

He is already the sire of Grand Scholar who ran third in the Maribyrnong Trial LR.

Whilst the others haven’t placed as yet, it’s the high quality races that their trainers have placed them in, that highlights their ability they are displaying on the training tracks.

WANDJINA 2yo’s have only raced in the best company. Unlike some sires whose progeny have raced in country races or provincial grade events, WANDJINA has only been represented in the top draw races as explained below.

On the 29/09/18 both Autocratic and Vaporizing ran in the Colts & Geldings Breeders' Plate Gr.3

On the same day 29/09/18 Honey Go Lightly went around in the Fillies Gimcrack Stakes Gr.3

To have 3 runners on the opening weekend of the 2yo season certainly wasn’t anticipated.

Both Autocratic and Vaporizing had both run 3rd in their official 2yo trials to gain their starts in the Breeders Plate whilst Honey Go Lightly won her heat in fast time to gain her start in the Gimcrack Stakes girls division.

Then on the 6/10/18 Grand Scholar ran 3rd in the Maribyrnong Trial LR having run second in her trial.

Next on the 6/11/18 Dreamtime Lady competed in the Ottawa Stakes Gr.3

That was followed on 2/12/18 by Vaporizing and Bengalla Bay running in the Max Lees 2YO Classic.

What this is highlighting is the WANDJINA 2yo’s are sound, tough youngsters, showing intelligence and racecraft.

Trainers have sent them to the races for experience and put them away so they will have been well educated 2yo’s when the better races of the Autumn arrive.

* Wandjina was rated the fastest two-year-old in Gai Waterhouse's stable of his 2013/14 2yo season.

* Gai Waterhouse declared in Sydney Morning Herald, "He was the fastest two-year-old in my stable – he's the best three-year-old in Australia..."

* Form analyst Vince Accardi said: "The final figures (for the Gr1 Australian Guineas) are OUTSTANDING – 9 lengths above standard puts him right at the top of the tree – a STUNNING performance"

* Racenet said: "Wandjina confirmed his potential in the big leagues when splitting two of the best sprinter/milers in Australia being Dissident and Chautauqua".

* Wandjina was Snitzel’s First Yearling to make $1 million.

* His Dam is the brilliant “blue hen” mare - LA BAMBA. She has 18 SW’s in the first 2 dams including multiple Hong Kong Gr.1 winner INSPIRATION.

* Wandjina passed his own good looks to the high majority of his progeny which was evidenced by his yearling averages. Across all sales, his 47 yearlings to sell traded at an average of $110,223 and sold up to $360,000.

* Wandjina yearlings averaged $151,944 at Magic Millions and $141,000 at Easter.

* His strength, power and endurance will be perfectly suited to Australian sprint and mile courses.

* He won as a 2yo over 1,000m and as a 3yo at 1400m and 1600m.

WANDJINA - His RACETRACK Story

Wandjina started favourite on debut in the Listed ATC Breeders Plate, before pulling up extremely shinsore.

Like his sire Snitzel and most of the Snitzel progeny, Wandjina took time to fully mature.

After his debut run in the spring, he returned mid-February when winning first-up at Warwick Farm before his next two starts he finished fourth in both the Lonhro Plate LR and then fourth again in the Gr2 Todman Slipper Trial.

However it would be as an autumn 3yo where he blossomed.

He gave a glimpse of what he had to offer when as a spring 3yo, he finished third in the Caulfield Guineas, his first attempt at Group 1 level.
However his 3yo autumn preparation was outstanding.

He proved too strong in leading all the way to win the CS Hayes Stakes Group 3 over 1400m and then 2 weeks later, he proved too strong again, this time as an all-the-way winner in the Group 1 Australian Guineas, defeating ATC Doncaster winner Kermadec back into fourth spot.

At his next start he was freshened-up for 6 weeks into the All Aged Stakes, where he split Dissident and Chautauqua.

He finished 0.2 lengths (short half-head) in second place in the Group 1 ATC All Aged Stakes.

He was then sent to Royal Ascot for the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee but typical of many colts, he became stirred up and fractious by the big occasion and was over awed. However he finished a respectable 6th of 15 runners in Europe’s premier sprint which was a big effort.

He was then retired to stud at Leading Hunter Valley thoroughbred nursery NEWGATE FARM.
