The first of August is important on the racing calendar as not only is it regarded as the horse’s birthday but it’s when many mares start producing their offspring.
Horses that are born earlier in the season have a distinct advantage when it comes to racing on the track as a 2yo.
One of the earlier foals born this season was at Widden Stud
Some horses may not be born until December which gives the foals that are born in August to September a distinct 3-4 month advantage.
A comparison in human terms would be pairing a 12 year old against a 15 year old in a sporting contest.
In almost all cases, the 15 year old would have the significant edge in maturity and strength when competing.
In summary, the extra few months that a horse is alive enables them to have more time to grow, mature and learn in one of the most crucial parts of their life.
Dynamic Syndications own Reward for Effort was a colt that had this advantage (born August 28th) and was able to come out and win the Blue Diamond Stakes as a 2yo.
Reward for Effort made the most of his early birth date
In Dynamic’s current crop, our Northern Meteor – Comedy Club filly also has this advantage becoming the first Northern Meteor foal to be born anywhere in the world on the 5th of August 2010.
Another one of our foals was the Exceed and Excel – Shoot the Stars colt that was born on the 25th of August 2010 and is currently up for syndication to be trained by Peter Moody.
Our Exceed and Excel - Shoot the Stars colt was an impressive early foal
On the odd occasion there is a horse that can “buck the trend” as the Dean Watt syndicated Bradbury’s Luck did when it won the 2yo Magic Millions as a late October foal.
However there is no doubting that this is a very exciting time of year with the foaling period continuing until December and the Spring Carnival only just round the corner.
