Gr3 WIN by GAMAY Announces Another Oaks Contender for PIERRO
Gr3 WIN by GAMAY Announces Another Oaks Contender for PIERRO

Gamay
became the
19th
stakes-winner for super young sire PIERRO
, who has been in hot form since the start of the season and stands at Coolmore in 2019 at a service fee of
$88,000.
Champion Australian First, Second and Third Season Sire, the Golden Slipper winning PIERRO in his first 3 crops of has already produced 5 Gr1 Winners including 2 Derby Winners and could well have a third in 2 weeks time with his son SHADOW HERO being the current favourite for the VRC Derby.
On Saturday at Caulfield, GAMAY another of his daughters announced she could easily join Pierro’s previous VRC Oaks winner PINOT as another Gr1 Classics winner this superstar sire when she charged home to impressively Win the Gr3 MRC Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield.
GAMAY (Navy Blue) winning the Gr3 Ethereal Stakes
Trained by Archie Alexander, Gamay only broke her maiden at Ballarat on September 6 and was then a good runner-up in the Oaks Trial at Flemington.
GAMAY took another big step forward with this win in the Gr3 Ethereal Stakes showing real stamina to find the line hard and win by a long neck over smart staying filly and race favourite Vegas Jewel (Shocking) whilst easily turning the tables on Celestial Falls who finished ahead of Gamay in the Oaks Trial.
With an eye on next month’s Gr1 Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 7, the three-year-old filly
GAMAY
showed enormous courage over the final 400m after moving up to challenge Celestial Falls who was no match for
GAMAY
and fighting off Vegas Jewel.
The pace was on early in the race as jockey Declan Bates felt the pressure to respond.
GAMAY
worked towards the leader at the turn in what turned out to be an extremely honest win in the famous Coolmore colours.
GAMAY
had her price slashed into equal favouritism ahead of next month’s VRC Oaks alongside Ethereal Stakes runner-up Vegas Jewel.
“She’s always been a really nice filly. I remember back in about February time she hadn’t even had a start and Arch said to me, ‘I reckon she’s an Oaks filly this’. Today’s a bit of a fork in the road though, we thought at Flemington she went super but just had no luck. We thought if she runs top four today, we should push on to the Oaks” stable representative Jeremy Rogers said.
Gamay
has firmed from $15.00 into $7.00 with Ladbrokes on the back of this run. The win was the three-year-old’s second from only five career starts, but also Declan Bates’ first win on Caulfield Cup day.
When asked about the run Bates said “There was a bit of pressure early but she normally begins really well so you need to be in that forward position. I always travelled like the winner and she responded to the pressure”
Bates declared that
GAMAY
looks a serious Oaks contender and thinks she continues to show promising signs of improvement.
“I think each race this prep she’s lifted, I galloped with her last week after her last win and I thought she improved again so I was quite confident here today. I think she can step out further and improve again.”
GAMAY
now looks to become only the second horse to complete the Ethereal-VRC Oaks double following in the same path Set Square did for trainer Ciaron Maher in 2014.
Vegas Jewel, who hit the line strongly for second, has also firmed in Oaks betting from $12.00 into $7.00.
A $110,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from the Highview draft, Gamay runs in the Coolmore colours and has the overall record of two wins and two seconds from just five starts with prizemoney just shy of $160,000.
Gamay is a half-sister to stakes-winner Meidung and is closely related to her Gr2 winning daughter Banish, who is by Pierro’s sire Lonhro.
Gamay is the eighth winner from eight foals to race from Amish, a Canny Lad half-sister to Lonhro’s $1.2million earning Gr2 winner Pinwheel.
Amish has a yearling colt by Coolmore stud’s No Nay Never (USA).
