Autumn Angel’s emphatic victory in the $1 million ATC Australian Oaks 2400m Gr1 is a major milestone for her sire The Autumn Sun, the best racing colt by the great Redoute’s Choice and now a Group 1 sire.
Autumn Angel’s performance, backing up from her courageous Adrian Knox S. G3 second last Saturday, was franked by the quality of her opposition: she defeated the VRC Oaks Gr1 winner Zardozi, the race favourite and New Zealand Derby Gr1 & Storm Queen S. Gr1 winner Orchestral, Levin Classic Gr1 winner Quintessa, valiant Storm Queen runner-up Tutta La Vita and VRC Oaks 3rd Basilinna.

With all the fancies in the firing line at the 200m, Autumn Angel displayed her staying credentials as she surged clear under Mark Zahra to defeat the Victoria Oaks winner Zardozi (Kingman) by three-quarters of a length with the NZ Derby and Vinery Stud Stakes winner Orchestral (Savabeel) a head back in third.
Autumn Angel winning the Gr2 Kewney
The Group 2 Kewney Stakes winner at Flemington on March 9, Autumn Angel prepped for the Oaks with a second in last week’s Adrian Knox Stakes, conceding the winner 8kgs on a heavy track.
In 9 starts Autumn Angel advances her record to four wins, two seconds, and two thirds with earnings of $1,129,790 with victories at Group 1, 2 & 3 levels over 1600m, 2000m & 2400m at Flemington, Caulfield & Randwick.
"She has thrived this week coming off the back-up,” Peter Moody said.
“I was taken aback so much, that when Mark (Zahra) got on her, I was worried that I might not have done enough with her this week, but she has thrived.
“A big special thanks to my team at home and to the Randwick track staff, what a phenomenal job they have done over the last couple of weeks under trying circumstances. Last Saturday was phenomenal and to back it up with this track today, congratulations to Michael Wood and his team.”
It was Peter Moody’s 59th Group 1 winner and the second in a week after the win of Chain Of Lightning in the TJ Smith Stakes.
“This is great. I withdrew her from the VRC Oaks, where she was probably the favourite to wait for this one. It is great to be rewarded and nice to get one right.”
A $230,000 purchase for Moody Racing from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
She is the best of three winners from four to race for the Group 3 winner Angel Of Mercy (Hussonet), whose career came to a close when second to Cosmic Endeavour in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara.
A $575,000 buy for Katsumi Yoshida at the 2014 National Broodmare Sale, Angel Of Mercy has a yearling filly by The Autumn Sun and a colt foal by Maurice (JPN).
She was covered by Hitotsu last spring.
Autumn Angel is the first Group 1 winner for young sire and the 5-time Group 1 winner The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice).
Arrowfield’s Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer, said after the Oaks, “What a beautiful filly, out of a great mare and just a great pedigree going forward…It’s great for the stallion, we’ve always had great belief in him and he’s really starting to deliver.
“She’s top-class this filly. We’ve always felt The Autumn Sun’s progeny would be horses that when we got to these Classic races they’d come into their own and what a performance that was.
“I think that’s one of the strongest Oaks I’ve ever seen…the first five across the line could win any normal Oaks in any other year.”
It has been a good Championships week for Arrowfield Stud which celebrated another two graduate successes at Randwick: last Saturday’s stunning Doncaster Mile Gr1 winner Celestial Legend (Dundeel-Sarraqa), and the Sapphire S. G2 winner Wee Nessy (Snitzel-Later Gator).
The 7th Group 1 winner bred by the partnership of Arrowfield & Japan’s famed Northern Farm, Autumn Angel is out of the very good racemare Angel Of Mercy (by Hussonet), who won three Listed races and the BRC Lord Mayor’s Cup G3, and was a close 2nd in the Tattersall’s Tiara G1 at her final start.
The combination of Redoute’s Choice’s sons with Hussonet’s daughters has now produced 10 stakes winners from 106 runners, including dual Group 1 winner and brilliant sire Extreme Choice.
It’s notable that three of The Autumn Sun’s first four stakes winners have won at Group level, while the fourth, Listed winner Coco Sun continues to develop: she scored by 3 lengths over 1600m at Bendigo’s Metro meeting on Saturday.

Team Dynamic have been bullish on the sire from the start but knew with him that with a little patience owners would be rewarded.
It’s no coincidence as to why Dynamic Syndications purchased a superb colt by THE AUTUMN SUN at the 2024 Magic Millions Sales.
Our Colt at the sales
He was a colossal colt by the super young sire from the 1200m winning mare
GRAVITY ZERO a daughter of champion sire More Than Ready.
Firstly, it is vital that our owners and followers are aware of the highest regard we have for our (nearly private) trainer based at Newcastle – JASON DEAMER.
Dynamic JASON DEAMER
Jason only has 12 boxes to train from. That is by choice. Jason feels that a dozen is a comfortable level for him to give the full attention to detail to each horse in his care. 11 of the 12 are filled by our Dynamic Syndications horses. Jason’s horsemanship is exceptional, and he rides our horses trackwork each day.
So, this year we went to the sales to buy for Jason to train, the nicest colt we could find to be a 3yo and 4yo type sprinter/miler, knowing under Jason’s care, the longevity of such a horse would be increased giving extended racing/prizemoney opportunities.
Jason does a fantastic job with our horses and most of those he trains for us have hit the glass ceiling elsewhere before arriving at Newcastle.
We wanted to give Jason a yearling that hadn’t been elsewhere that he can mould and polish into something special.
He has only been given that opportunity a couple of times previously and one of those is HARD TO SAY a $160,000 Magic Millions purchase who has a career record of 20 starts: 6 Wins, 4 placings and is a 4-time stakes-performer winning $570,500 to date.
HARD TO SAY
The next year we purchased Jason Awesome Tycoon who has had 5 starts: 2-0-2-1 and won recently resuming after a spell.
AWESOME TYCOON
After our due diligence work on the catalogue’s pedigree ratings, knowing which crosses are successful and what to avoid, then after three rounds of physical inspections, then vet inspection, x-rays, and endoscopic evaluations, we desired a particular colt to aim at in the Arrowfield Stud draft by their super sire THE AUTUMN SUN.
OUR Yearling COLT after purchase
It was Lot 729 being offered for sale under a Joint Venture foal share arrangement. They were only placing a very modest reserve on the colt because it was a foal share arrangement, and they needed the horse to be sold.
Bred on a cross that was rated A+++ and with a Quality factor of Q7, this rating was the Equal Top 3rd Rating Score in the whole catalogue. Of further importance to Team Dynamic, it was the Highest Rated Yearling in the whole Arrowfield Stud draft.
So, we knew we were buying the Best from the Best. The Best on genetic breeding, from arguably the Best nursery in the industry.
The Rated Cross is REDOUTE’S CHOICE (Sire of THE AUTUMN SUN) over daughters of MORE THAN READY.
This is a phenomenal working cross. It has produced 24 Stakes Winners already!
69 runners: 53 Winners (77%) and 23% Stakes Horses : Winners!
Whilst DANEHILL (Sire of Redoute’s Choice over daughters of More Than Ready) has 48 Stakes Winners.
However, despite all the ticks lining up as far as the breeder, and the genetics passing scrutiny, that is still only the minority aspects. The most important aspect is the individual. It’s here that this colt sold himself.
Team Dynamic and our veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts rated him a score of 8+. That was the equal highest rating we gave a yearling at the sale.
So, he had the type, was clean on x-rays and scope plus has the “bells and whistles” genetics.
Knowing we had the product and then the realistic reserve because it was a joint venture foal share, we believed we were in for the fight.
We had valued the colt significantly higher than the reserve. He was a at least a multiple of 3 times service fee of $60,000 + GST placing him at $180,000 + one bid up to $200,000. However, with a reserve set at $80,000 when the gavel fell it was our bid at $90,000 + GST (1.5 times Service Fee) that was the winning bid.
We had our eye on this fella from the start !
This was one of the true saleyard gifts.
