Group 1 Winners Prove You Don’t Need To Own An Oil Rig To Buy Them

Thoroughbred industry website Breednet.com.au have done a review of the 58 individual Group 1 Winners that won the total 73 Group 1 races for this 2018-19 Racing Season.

Analysis of these 58 Group 1 winning horses reveals participants mistakenly believe that domestic thoroughbred auctions are the logical market to find your Group 1 winner.

However, the reality is 53% of Group 1 winners this 2018-19 racing season, were retained to race by their breeders or they were sourced from overseas.

27 Group 1 winners (47%) were SOLD at auction through either Inglis, Magic Millions or NZB with 12 each from Inglis and Magic Millions and 3 from NZ Bloodstock.

The balancing majority being 31 Group 1 winners (53%) included:

* 11 Northern Hemisphere bred horses (19%)

* 5 Australian Darley Stud (Godolphin) homebreds (8%) – Kiamichi (Golden Slipper), Microphone (ATC Sires Produce), Lyre (Blue Diamond), Alizee (Futurity) and Trekking (Stradbroke).

* 15 (26%) were a mixture of Australian or New Zealand bred horses that were either passed-in at auction or not offered for sale, being intentionally retained by their breeder to race.

Of the horses SOLD at auction, just 9 of the 27 Group 1 winners (33%) sold for a price greater than $200,000.

The most expensive, The Autumn Sun (Inglis Easter) was bred and sold by Arrowfield Stud for $700,000.

The next most expensive Gr1 Winner was $400,000 for Qafila (Magic Millions) sold by Attunga Stud.

Sunlight ($300,000 Magic Millions sold by Widden Stud),

Manuel (Inglis Easter $240,000 sold by Segenhoe),

Winx (Magic Millions $230,000 sold by Coolmore),

Booker ($230,000 Inglis Premier sold by Mill Park),

Grunt ($220,000 NZB Premier sold by Trelawney Stud),

Brutal ($220,000 NZB Premier sold by Mapperley Stud) and

Prince Fawaz ($220,000 Magic Millions sold by Baramul Stud).

Whilst the “Fairy Tale” bargain buy of this seasons Group 1 winners was Mystic Journey, an $11,000 Magic Millions Tasmania yearling sold by Armidale Stud. She has now won over $3million.

However buyers don’t need to despair that the only way to own a Group 1 winner is to have an oil rig in the backyard !

Owners can still have the dream of winning Group 1 races, without shopping at the “unproductive” top end of the market.

More often the very best horses come out of the middle market.

This year’s results showed 18 Group 1 winners (66%) sold for less than $200,000.

Whilst selecting yearlings is an inexact science, there is no doubt to the fact “horses don’t know how much you pay for them.”

The art is knowledge and eye.

The battler can compete with captains of industry as long as the owner gets the right advice from true market professionals in the first instance.

Money can’t buy experience.

Only 7 (2.8%) didn’t make the grade and this was through either injury or there were a few that were sound, just very slow – “That’s Racing.”
