Widden Stud's champion young stallion Zoustar delivered a Group 2 double across two states on Saturday courtesy of quality 4yo racemare Mizzy wining the ATC Sheraco Stakes and then 4yo gelding Zoutori, became Zoustar’s tenth (10th) Stakes Winner with an explosive victory in the Group 2 VRC Bobby Lewis Stakes at Flemington.
Zoutori
Promising four year-old Zoutori missed out when he was tried in Stakes Company in Brisbane last winter but he showed serious spring potential with a dazzling first up win, to claim his first Black-Type race.
The Ellerton and Zahra trained gelding powered home from off the pace to win the 1200 metre sprint by two lengths in a slick 1:08.37, taking his overall record to 5 wins from 14 starts with earnings approaching $350,000.
"Things went a bit pear-shaped for him in the last campaign," said co-trainer Matt Ellerton.
"We took him to Brisbane and it was pretty fruitless so it's good to pick up the pieces today.
"He just didn't handle the right-handed way of going (in Brisbane). I thought he ran well enough in his first run up there and then Craig Williams just said he wanted to turn left the whole way up there in his next start.
"He may well also not be a miler."
A $160,000 Inglis Easter purchase Zoutori and is the first foal of Atotori, a half-sister by Haradasun to Group 3 winner Castlethorpe and to the dam of Group 2 winner Quiet Oasis and Group 3 winner Young Pretender.
Atotori has a big international pedigree being a grand-daughter of Champion European Two and Three Year Old Filly Park Express, the dam of leading sire and Epsom Derby winner New Approach.
Zoustar’s daughter MIZZY earlier in the day had won the Group 2 ATC Sheraco Stakes at Rosehill by a short neck.
Mizzy made it back-to-back stakes wins when the four-year-old fought off all challengers in this Group 2.
Mizzy
Trained by Anthony Cummings, Mizzy had won the Group 3 ATC Toy Show Stakes at her first run back from a spell and kept up the good work with this brilliant front running win in this 1200 metre sprint.
The daughter of Zoustar flashed her spring credentials with a classy display in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality last month and was at her best when leading from barriers to box under the urging of Tommy Berry.
“She’s done a fantastic job,” Cummings said.
"The plan was to be quick out, she got over, got an easy lead and today that's been vital for all the winners."
“Great to see her turn up here today in good shape, have a great fight to the line and get the result.
Mizzy had only won once in 13 starts heading into her four-year-old season but has quickly added that tally to start her spring preparation.
Cummings indicated he will target more black type and head towards the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) in a fortnight’s time but was keeping his options open for the spring.
Berry has been aboard Mizzy in both victories this time in and produced a well-judged front running ride after being allowed to dictate at his own leisure in the Sheraco. Fasika and Champagne Cuddles both loomed in the straight but couldn’t go past Cummings’ in-form mare.
“She’s so tough and honest,” Tommy Berry said. He also rode Gayatri to victory on the day.
“She took luck out of the equation pretty much two strides after the start.
“When she jumped so well I took her to the front - you don’t get sectionals like that very often, it’s gold.
“She kicked really well on the bend and was very tough late so she deserves this.”
A $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase, Mizzy has won 3 of 15 starts and placed a further 5 times earning in excess of $447,000 in prizemoney.
Mizzy is the first foal of Stakes-Winner Missy Cummings, a daughter of stakes-winner Lady Knockout. Missy Cummings has a weanling colt by Capitalist and is in foal to Written Tycoon.
The success of Mizzy and Zoutori made it a great day for the Widden Stud young sire Zoustar, who has been booked out for months for the upcoming 2019 season at a service fee of $154,000.
