HARD TO SAY is a
2yo Colt by
EXCEED AND EXCEL ex MALASUN, in the care of astute horseman
JASON DEAMER at Newcastle and is the
first yearling purchase we have
syndicated around Jason.
Dynamic Trainer - Jason Deamer
The promising colt has had tongues wagging at Newcastle for several weeks off impressive work times and easy jump out wins.
A decision was made by
Team Dynamic and Jason Deamer to take
HARD TO SAY up to Scone for his debut trial, rather than going to the official 2yo Trials next Monday at the Kensington track.
It was tempting to run at the official trials, as placegetters receive qualifying points towards a start in the
Breeders Plate (colts) and Gimcrack Stakes (fillies) on the October long weekend.
However, due to COVID restrictions, Jason would not be allowed to attend the Kensington track, which would have resulted in us needing to send
HARD TO SAY down on a truck by himself and have staff from another stable, receive him and present him at the trials, then bundle him back onto the truck to send home.
Jason would not have been able to observe how our youngster travelled down, nor how he would have pulled up post-trial.
Where at Scone, Jason could drive the horse up himself, stay with him pre-trial, talk to rider
Lee Magorrian pre and post-trial, observe how our colt pulled up post-trial, before loading him back onto the truck for the trip back to Newcastle.
Overall, we believed this was the most sensible approach considering the horse’s welfare for his first day out.
It’s always nice when training track ability converts to being pleasing to the eye, such as it was for
HARD TO SAY.
This trial was all about education. It was not to go out and sizzle along in front, because that doesn’t necessarily teach the horse anything. We already know he runs quickly, here we wanted to see how he would react when back in behind other horses.
Whilst it was just a trial of 4 runners, we simply could not be more impressed by his efforts.
Jumping well from the outside barrier, jockey Lee Magorrian, took hold of our colt and drifted back to the tail, 3-lengths off the leader after the first 250m.
HARD TO SAY back last at the 650m
Approaching the home turn, Lee Magorrian slipped
HARD TO SAY some rein, and our colt went through under a hold to eyeball the leader.
HARD TO SAY balancing for the run up the straight
Passing the 200m, the
Dynamic Duo started to ease to the front and then,
HARD TO SAY at the 100m
over the final 50m he was allowed to extend away without being pressured.
HARD TO SAY at the line
Watching the trial, naturally still very green, and has a lot to learn, but would have derived significant benefit from this hit-out in fitness and racecraft.
The track was rated a Soft 7, but our jockey confided that in his opinion, the track was definitely well into the Heavy range.
For the conditions they ran a good time for the 900m of
55.40 with a last 600m in
35.76 sec.
The trials were conducted on the outside of the course proper, with witches’ hats marking the way on the inside. This is extremely confronting for young horses, who have been taught to follow the rail in their early training. With no rail to follow, and out in the centre of the track, at a course he had not seen previously, he had a good look about in the straight but still accelerated away with ease.
To put this time in perspective, he ran home faster than half a dozen maiden trials for the older horses.
HARD TO SAY (Exceed And Excel x Malasun) (Jason Deamer / Lee Magorrian), won the trial by a widening 1.68 lengths over Last Bid Liam (Angela Davies / Jenny Duggan) with Shaggy Rogers (Brett Cavanough / Madeline Owens) 4.57 lengths away in third, and Miss Espionage (Brett Cavanough / Ashley Morgan) 5.68 lengths behind in fourth.
HARD TO SAY as a yearling
HARD TO SAY with Annie Woollet & Cherrie Freeman at the yearling sales
HARD TO SAY was purchased for
$160,000 + GST by Dynamic Syndications / Dean Watt Bloodstock as Lot 513 offered by
Eureka Stud Qld (as agent) at the 2021 Magic Millions Yearling Sales. By World Champion 2yo Sire
EXCEED AND EXCEL, he is from the brilliant 2yo Stakes Winner
MALASUN who won the Blue Diamond Preview (LR) over 1000m.
MALASUN is a half-sister to dual Stakes Winner
STOKEHOUSE, and Stakes Placed
Hostwin Epanoui.
A decision will be made over the coming days after we observe how he came through this trial, as to whether we push on to the early 2yo race or stop now and give him a short break to be back before Christmas to aim at qualifying for the
Magic Millions.
