The Foundation Cup (ofiicially known as the Naturalism Stakes) is a:
“win it – you’re in it” (Caulfield Cup) race and that's likely to be the next start for
Harlem (GB)
HARLEM being sold through the auction ring in 2016
HARLEM was the sale-topper at the 2016 Tattersalls Newmarket Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale and he has raced into Caulfield Cup calculations with an emphatic win in the Group 3 MRC Foundation Cup at Caulfield.
Making his fifth start in Australia, Harlem was given a peach of a ride by Dwayne Dunn to defeat stablemate Samovare (Savabeel) by three and a quarter length with the pacemaker Stampede (High Chaparral) a short half-head away in third.
Harlem is trained by David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig. The son of CHAMPS ELYSEES was bought for
520,000 guineas ($928,000 AUD) from the Juddmonte Farm draft last year.
HARLEM is now 12-1 for the $3,000,000 Caulfield Cup on October 21 and co-trainer Ben Hayes was understandably excited.
Harlem Winning the G3 MRC Foundation Cup
According to Ben Hayes who trains Harlem in partnership with his father David and Tom Dabernig,
“His form in Europe was over further, so it's very exciting. Look out Caulfield Cup.
"The way he won today, he won quite convincingly and they weren't slouches in that field.
"So it was good to see him do it.
"We've always really liked him - his run in the Heatherlie was excellent, he could've finished second, Hayes said.
"It was a great ride by Dwayne today, we were worried drawing barrier one, that we could be unlucky, but it went to plan and he won dominantly.
"We'll see how he comes out of this but I'd say he'll probably go straight to the Caulfield Cup and then to the Melbourne Cup."
Harlem was trained in Europe by Andre Fabre to win a Longchamp maiden over 2400m before a Listed stakes win over the same trip at Vichy. He was also placed at Group 2 and Group 3 level in France.
Harlem made his first start in Australia in March with an excellent third behind Palentino and Tosen Stardom (JPN) in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Harlem was purchased on behalf of a syndicate that raced the 2015 Group 1 Australian Cup winner Spillway.
HARLEM races in the colours of Hong Kong-based owner Edmond Lee who also part-owns
22,000 guineas ($40,480 AUD) Tattersalls October Yearling Sale purchase REDKIRK WARRIOR who is set to run in the inaugural $10,000,000 Everest.
Graduates of the Tattersalls Newmarket Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale have won 55 Group / Listed races in Australia since 2014.
The sale has also produced nine Group 1 winners worldwide during this same period including last year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas winner JET SETTING who was purchased for just
12,000 guineas ($22,080 AUD).
Catalogues for the world’s largest horses in training sale are set to be published on Thursday, September 28.
The sale will take place over five days from Monday October 30th to Friday November 3rd.
