Not all winners need to be winning races at metropolitan Saturday grade to get their owners nerves tingling and produce enormous enjoyment and immense satisfaction.
It was a Friday afternoon country meeting at Muswellbrook that took centre stage for Team Dynamic this week, as our previous 3 start maiden JUMEIRAH BEACH broke through for his Co-Trainers RICHARD & WILL FREEDMAN plus our Top Team of Patient and Loyal co-owners that race a big and strong son of PRIDE OF DUBAI from the highly successful dual stakes winning mare VORMISTA.
JUMEIRAH BEACH (4yo g. by PRIDE OF DUBAI from VORMISTA) won the ALLWELD SERVICES MAIDEN PLATE (1280m) on a Good 3. Time: 1:14.66 Last 600m: 0:34.73, Barrier 1, 59.0kgs, Rider: Aaron Bullock, Career Record: 4 Starts: 1:0:0, Prizemoney: $17,650.
JUMEIRAH BEACH named after the fantastic beachside location in Dubai, was well named but this $80,000 Magic Millions 2018 yearling sale purchase has tested the patience of his owners and trainers. Early minor injuries held him back, but the biggest issues have been between his ears, as he has taken a long time to mentally develop into a racehorse and is still a work in progress.
That was on display at his most recent start when he did so much wrong in the run that the Stewards made our horse barrier trial again to be assured his racing manners are acceptable to go back to the sport.
That trial was a preview of Friday’s domination. When Nash Rawiller sat on him in the trial and showed him who was in charge, he was a blitzing 3 length winner in that trial.
Back to the sport on Friday, we had other races in mind for our horse, but the racing gods were unkind with the barrier draws.
We had accepted in 4 races; Canberra, Kembla; Newcastle and Muswellbrook and we were adamant he had his hoof on the till. However, he is a headstrong horse and we wanted to draw in closer to the rail so he could follow the paint as we work on improving his manners.
We drew Barrier 13/18 at Canberra, 16/18 at Kembla and 7/10 at Newcastle but came up with Barrier 1 of 11 at Muswellbrook and we scratched from the other venues having finally drawn the right marble.
A masculine, big and strong individual, an equine form of Adonis, he has a few loose marbles upstairs, and we needed a strong rider to control our talented but wayward galloper. Team Dynamic swooped upon Aaron Bullock to take the reins, and a brilliant steer made the race a one act affair, but it wasn’t all beer and skittles.
Our trainers RICHARD and WILL FREEDMAN at Rosehill have always known that JUMEIRAH BEACH has plenty of talent, but the boys have worked tirelessly to address his manners and the result was here to be seen.
Opening in the market at $4.40, the money kept pouring in and on every call, he firmed to start on the TAB as a $1.95 favourite and whilst he found some significant trouble in running, he never left his followers doubting when he posted an eased down but widening 4.21 length winning margin.
Will Freedman was interviewed pre-race and explained he was confident, but would prefer to lead as this will keep our boy focus and out of trouble, but Will waved a red flag when he mentioned as much as we would like to lead, there were some riders in the race that can’t judge pace and would likely want to drive forward, so if that’s going to happen we would take a sit.
Will’s words would seem to haunt us in the middle stages, but all good things work out in the end, and our horse recorded his first of what appears to be many wins in the future.
As the gates flung back, JUMEIRAH BEACH was quickly into stride, holding the fence before the most ridiculous set of tactics from a few opposition riders unfolded.
Aaron Bullock drove JUMEIRAH BEACH forward, and then two riders took off as if they were in an Oakleigh Plate. Then inexplicably, two additional senior riders also applied pressure wanting to get forward. As a result, JUMEIRAH BEACH was allowed to be steadied but found himself in 5th spot, 3 lengths back on the paint.
That was fine until the 800m when the leader crossed to the fence causing another apprentice to badly check, which almost unseated that rider and whose horse came straight back into our galloper.
This was a nightmare for a horse trying to improve his manners. Then at the 600m another bit of wild west riding was going on upfront. Aaron wasn’t going to stay in on the fence at this stage being hampered, and pushed the button to get our horse moving out 3 deep off the heels of the leaders as they field thundered to the home turn.
This wasn’t ideal as our horse was on the wrong leg at that point, and was unbalanced as they swung into the home straight.
Into his work as they passed the 300m, nothing else was a chance as JUMEIRAH BEACH with his lovely long stride and superior class factor put a gap in the opposition and it was all over with a furlong to run, the only question would be the margin. As the camera flashed it was 4.21 Lengths x 1 length.
Post-race interviews on Sky Channel by their presenters stated: “Well he’s won, but it wasn’t through doing things right. He did a lot wrong throughout the run, but he’s just had too much class on his rivals there JUMEIRAH BEACH, Aaron Bullock in the saddle, for Richard and Will Freedman.
“No doubts with the winner JUMEIRAH BEACH whose got a little bit of class on his side but just needs to mend his manners.
Gary Harley for Sky Channel added: “His trials indicated he has a lot of class, he was the biggest plunge of the day with TAB no doubt, but when the pace slackened he wanted to throw his head around, and race off the track, he did a lot wrong, but he had a very strong jockey, and that was Aaron Bullock’s third win for the day, he straightened him up in the straight and he’s bolted in by 4 lengths.”
“He’s a nice horse, he’s got plenty of ability, but he’s got a few manners to mend, and we catch up with our winning trainer Will Freedman.”
Gary Harley then stated to Will Freedman: “He was well placed here by the Team, and a cross over nose band on for the first time. A few anxious moments there Will? They slowed the pace, the horse in front of him got a bad check, and he got up on the bit, then and wanted to tug.”
Will responded with a huge grin on his face: “Never in doubt”.
Gary Harley retorted: “Well, I didn’t say it was in doubt, but there were problems during the race.”
Will then said: “Yeah there was, it didn’t quite go to plan but to be fair, he’s been well managed by Dynamic Syndications. We went back to the trials and a lot of credit to Nash, he got him back going straight, and gave him a good educational trial, and it all came off. This is why you try to get the best jockeys you can, because when things don’t go to plan, they find a way, so all credit to the ride, and in the end, he didn’t have a lot of choice when our horse was a little slow into gear.”
“I thought he might have been going to lead, but he was never going to lead as those others come out of the barriers like a bomb.”
“Fortunately, because he’s a big horse, he got an uninterrupted run, and that was the winning move. Thanks.”
Aaron Bullock was asked: “he didn’t make it easy today.”
Aaron said: “We just had a jockey in front of us there, as we got into stride, he got a bit unseated, I’m not sure what happened there.
“The key to racing is to stay out of trouble, and don’t lose momentum, and that’s what we did, and once we went past Bucko (Grant Buckley on Ollie’s Secret) which is the horse I thought was the one to beat, gee - he let down well. And he’s a nice horse and I felt that in him two runs ago. He was just all over the shop, and I just said to Mr Freedman, it’s crazy the difference its made in one run and a trial, and the penny’s dropped. 100% he’s a nice horse and over further, he’ll be a nice horse.
