Dynamic Syndications have been bullish about the progeny of exciting young sire JUSTIFY since his first crop were yearlings and his daughter out of the mare PICKIN’ TIME (by Flying Spur) was one we loved at the Magic Millions.
On Saturday at Newcastle, JUST IN TIME (3yo chestnut filly by Justify ex Pickin’ Time) faced the starter for the first time off the back of some very impressive trial form and won accordingly.
Our trainers Richard and Will Freedman presented her in excellent order to the parade ring and jockey Ash Morgan was in the saddle for this assignment.
The market rallied to her, and she was sent to the barriers as the $1.50 favourite in Race 7, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC F&M Maiden Handicap 1200m.
Connections were bullish that she would perform well off the back of two trial wins this prep, however at the back of our minds was that we believe she was looking for further in distance than the 1200m of this event and she lacked racecraft and experience compared to her peers.
Originally a field of 12 acceptors, the race fell away with 5 scratchings on the morning, leaving 7 starters to line-up. JUST IN TIME was extremely short at $1.50 with the top weight Cosy Corner at $2.90 (having been runner-up twice in 4 starts at Newcastle) and write your own ticket the other five runners.
JUST IN TIME was left with the outside barrier, which is never ideal for a debutant, but as the gates crashed back our filly was cleanly away and showed good gate speed to start to roll forward. Then out of the ruck Miss Artfire (4yo mare) put the handlebars down and set up a fast tempo leading the fence.
Ash Morgan allowed that runner to burn early petrol as he settled JUST IN TIME into the trailing position at the leader’s hindquarter giving JUST IN TIME a bunny to follow with a gap of two lengths back to the pack chasing.
There were no moves from any of the riders until the point of the home straight as they balanced up for the 400m run home.
Ash waited patiently on JUST IN TIME as runner-up Cosy Corner moved up behind us and then angled 3 deep into the running line a length off us as the field thundered past the 300m.
From this point to the camera the runners were locked into their spots and JUST IN TIME was in control through the line and was still full of running past the post.
Summary: 1 Start = 1:0:0 & Prizemoney $26,175
