The
bloodstock market continues to go from
strength to strength in Australia and after
Record Sales at the
Magic Millions on the Gold Coast in January (
up 16.6% Average and 21.8% Median), that was followed by a
Record at the
Inglis Classic (
up 18.9% Average and 25% Median).
Earlier this week it was the turn of
Magic Millions in Tasmania to post a
Record Sale (
up 9.2% Average and 7.1% Median), and the following two Days it was
Magic Millions in Perth that
smashed their
Sales Record (
up 31.8% Average and 36.6% Median).
The thoroughbred market
Australia wide is currently up on Average 19.2% and Median 22.6% and showing
no signs of abating, as demand for quality horses outweighs supply, with many similarities to the
Sydney housing market.
The driving force is
certainly the record levels of prizemoney on offer and after an era of COVID lockdowns, there is a trend to
enjoying your hobbies and interests more, and with racehorse ownership so affordable, its
“Living the Dream.”
A share in a racehorse allows owners to experience this, and the involvement and excitement can include the whole family and friends network.
However, it’s obviously getting harder and harder to buy high-quality yearlings at affordable, and importantly, correct value prices.
They are there at every sale but it’s becoming akin to the proverbial
“needle in the haystack.”
To date, Dynamic Syndications have purchased 16 Yearlings for 2022.
We did anticipate significant price rises in 2022. That’s why we started the season with
two private purchases well before the yearling sale circuit commenced, because we expected the price rises. Those two yearlings,
the ASTERN x BETTER LIFE Colt and the FROSTED x KITE HARAKA Filly we thought
were extremely good value at the time we purchased them.
However, now in hindsight, they have proven to be sensational value.
We have always believed year-on-year the best buying sale in Australia is the
Magic Millions in January on the Gold Coast. This is because it’s the
main sale where breeders take the majority of their better athletic, running types.
Whilst
Inglis Easter remains the pinnacle sale in the Southern Hemisphere, its prices are prohibitive to the average buyer and it’s more a fashion parade for later developing horses.
With our two private purchases banked, at this year’s
Magic Millions on the Gold Coast, we purchased 12 yearlings and we are delighted that we did. We have secured the best of the best that were available in our price ranges.
With then 14 yearlings secured in total, it was time to head to the
Inglis Classic.
Normally the
NZ Bloodstock Karaka Sales would be next in line but due to border restrictions, they were pushed back to
March.
So, the Inglis Classic was up next and what a feeding frenzy that sale was.
Logic and values were forgotten or totally disregarded as buyers paid significantly over market prices as a
“FOMO effect” (Fear Of Missing Out) gripped buyers logic. That’s because the psyche of those that thought Magic Millions was
“too expensive” needed to stock their stables from the Classic and chased harder for the lesser quality.
Also, it’s not a main level sale, as it is a traditional fourth
4th / 5th tier sale (behind
Easter, Magic Millions, NZ Bloodstock, Inglis Melbourne), so many of the horses were poorly bred either commercially and or genetically, plus many had been rejects on conformation from the Easter and Magic Millions sale catalogues.
After inspections, from a catalogue of
810 lots, we had only
29 yearlings of interest pass through to have a full veterinary inspection. To our disappointment,
25 of these 29 didn’t survive on either X-rays or endoscopic evaluation. That left us with only 4 to bid on and we purchased just
one (1) with the other 3 yearlings selling way above market valuation.
This is where we purchased Lot 118, a Colt by SO YOU THINK closely related to Champion SUNLINE.
On Monday 21 February the next sales to proceed were the
Magic Millions Tasmania Sale. This sale saw a 9.2% rise in the Average and a 7.1% rise in the Median. A boutique one day sale for horses mainly bred in Tasmania it’s a sale that we have never purchased from. However, there was a Lot in this year’s catalogue that pushed our buttons and passed all due diligence markers. So, we purchased this one yearling at the sale.
It was
LOT 3 a lovely bay filly by SMART MISSILE x READY TO LIVE – a Full Sister to super Dynamic Syndications race filly and dual stakes winner READY TO PROPHET.
The next sale to follow was Tuesday and Wednesday of this week when the
Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale was conducted.
Held behind the
Starlin style Iron Curtain that is the WA Border, there was negligible interest from Eastern States buyers, yet the sale still produced Record Smashing figures. The Average was
up 31.8% and the Median 36.6%. As none of our due diligence team could be in attendance,
we had no interest in securing from that sale.
Whilst this upcoming weekend the focus moves back to
Victoria, where the
Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale will be conducted with
793 Catalogued Lots over 3 days.
Team Dynamic have been inspecting yearlings since 9:00am Wednesday and have a short list available with the view of adding another yearling or two to our stable if prices are affordable.
However, we won’t ever chase, we have set our ceiling prices and won’t bid beyond that level.
If the Melbourne sale follows the same pattern, we should see a rise in the average in Victoria
from $139,000 up to $166,000 whilst he
Median should rise from $105,000 up to $130,000.
So, with 16 Yearlings in the Team (8 Colts and 8 Fillies) we have a lovely balance of yearlings to meet all desires and all budgets.
