Jonathan Munz is one of Australia’s Leading thoroughbred breeders, and his breeding operation GSA Bloodstock celebrated a wonderful Group 1 Double on Saturday at Randwick when he was the breeder of Gr1 Champagne Stakes 2yo Militarize and the next race he followed that success as the owner-breeder of All-Aged S. G1 winner Giga Kick.
Militarize was offered for sale by Bhima Thoroughbreds at Magic Millions and was an astute purchase by the big hitting and ultra successful co-ownership team of Newgate Bloodstock, China Horse Club & Trilogy Racing for $550,000.

GIGA KICK in Jonathan Munz famous colours winning the Gr1 All Aged Stakes
Having been third in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes and second in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes, Giga Kick revisited the winner's circle for the first time since his incredible The Everest triumph when earning a deserved Group 1 victory in the All-Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.
Giga Kick sprouted wings down the centre of the track to defeat Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux) by one and three-quarter lengths with Cascadian (New Approach) a short-head back in third.
The 3yo gelded son of Scissor Kick advances his record to six wins, a second and a third from nine starts, with earnings of $8,699,700.
SCISSOR KICK in Arrowfield Stud colours
Giga Kick was bred by Jonathan Munz's GSA Bloodstock, which also bred his sire - Scissor Kick
The two major arms of Jonathan Munz's thoroughbred operation are Pinecliff Racing and GSA Bloodstock, and his empire is making a substantial impact on our industry.
Jonathan Munz has been a long-time investor in the industry through both his racing and breeding operations, and while his famous white with red stripes have been featuring in the winner's circle across Australia, his high-profile broodmare band has been doing the job as well.
GSA Bloodstock was recently reported to have 15 mares that form part of joint venture with Arrowfield, and overall, GSA Bloodstock broodmare portfolio stands at approximately 80 mares.
The policy of GSA is a sensible one – they don’t like to punt on unknown sires if possible. They will only do that if the mating suits on paper.
Jonathan does his own mating analysis. He has an excellent reputation at understanding matings of the pedigrees of his broodmare band.
If it works on paper, GSA make sure that the conformation of the sire matches and complements the broodmare on type, and where it does, they go on from there.
The main priority for GSA Bloodstock is to ensure they produce a desirable commercial product, with the high majority of their horses going through the yearling sales.
They run a commercial operation and no matter how much money is thrown at our game, they believe in their solid business plan.
On average they will sell between 45-50 yearlings a year.
GSA Bloodstock is looking at the commercial market and their business model is, where possible, they don’t plan to retain any of their colts. They may choose to retain a share here or there, but overall their model is to sell colts.
They do retain some of their fillies, about half a dozen per year, depending on how the female family of each pedigree is performing. Especially if they are out of broodmares that are getting a bit of age on them, then they prefer to keep those mares’ daughters.
GSA Bloodstock also looks to purchase fillies through the yearling sales to identify future candidates to refresh their broodmare band.
International overview:
GSA Bloodstock did secure six mares by Galileo (Ire) through the sales in the United Kingdom and Europe over the past few years and they are all bred to the top-line sires in Australia.
Galileo works very well with Fastnet Rock, and as we saw with The Autumn Sun, he works well with Redoute's Choice blood.
Galileo is such an international sensation, that it doesn't matter what you stick with them.
They have put that blood across the Galileo’s and send them to Snitzel, Fastnet Rock and I Am Invincible. When you are buying mares out of Europe, they aren't cheap, so they need to be backed with these high-profile stallions.
While GSA Bloodstock's policy is generally to stick with proven sires, they have faith in Arrowfield Stud trio Scissor Kick, Pariah and Showtime and their faith has been rewarded with GIGA KICK.

Having reviewed the success above of GSA Bloodstock and Jonathan Munz’s understanding of the quality he wishes to breed, it’s far easier to understand what he was wanting to achieve when he mated THE AUTUMN SUN with his mare TOTAL DISCRETION - a daughter of NORTHERN METEOR – a son of ENCOSTA DE LAGO.
With GSA Bloodstock's understanding of breeding, then the old saying ring’s true again –
“If it Ain’t Broke - Don’t Fix It !”

The colt we have purchased has been purposely bred to be successful at an elite level racing.
Then we inspected the colt, and he was a lovely individual, which our vet rated very highly.
Also, his X-rays and scope were without issue.
SHANE ROSE
Since then, we have had the colt broken-in by SHANE ROSE.
It’s NO COINCIDENCE that the horse has broken-in exceptionally well and to such an extent, SHANE ROSE has purchased a share to race him with us.
Such was the awesome power and natural feel he gave Shane under saddle.
