The Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (2100m) (French Derby) was run at Longchamp overnight with a dominant win for unbeaten Lope de Vega colt LOOK DE VEGA, who was having his first start in a stakes race.
Trained by father and son duo Carlos and Yann Lerner, LOOK DE VEGA won his only start last season at two and resumed this year to win at Longchamp over 2000m earning a shot at the Derby at just his third start.
LOOK DE VEGA
LOOK DE VEGA pulled clear in the final furlong to add his name to the roll of honour. LOOK DE VEGA put a gap on the field in a race run in the heaviest ground since 2000, to win by two lengths from FIRST LOOK who is also a son of LOPE DE VEGA.
"This is fantastic, towards the end of my career to do this with my son Yann," said France-based trainer Carlos Lerner, who had won the 2001 Prix du Jockey-Club with Anabaa Blue.
"We've never, never had a horse like this, he's a crack."
“I am so excited and so happy–this horse is a machine,” said Carlos Lerner.
“I have always had in the back of my mind that he would be a top horse and now I can say he is the best I ever trained. Twenty-three years is a long wait to come across a top one again, but we have been lucky. He will stay further–he is in the Arc and that will be his target.”
Co-Trainer Yann Lerner added: "I was confident. The horse as you can see is made for that."
The 5-1 winner was ridden by Ronan Thomas who had steered LOOK DE VEGA to victory in both previous his wins said: "I'm enormously proud. Whatever happens now to leave a little trace in racing history and to win a home Derby is something to savour."
LOOK DE VEGA emulated the success of BOTH
his own sire LOPE DE VEGA (2010) and
grand-sire SHAMARDAL (2005),
as both had also won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby).
The colt made €160,000 at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling with his breeders retaining an interest in his ownership.
LOOK DE VEGA is the best of four winners from winning High Chaparral mare Lucelle, a half-sister to Group 2 winner The Black Princess from the family of Group 1 French Derby winner Lawman and French Oaks winner Latice.
He is the 130th stakes-winner and 21st Group 1 winner for Ballylinch Stud’s LOPE DE VEGA, who shuttled to Australia in the early years of his stud career and now stands at a fee of €125,000.
It was just a week ago that we reported LOPE DE VEGA had rocketed to pole position in Europe as Leading Sire and in the Northern Hemisphere as Leading Gr1 Sire for the current season.
His son LOOK DE VEGA also gave outstanding sire High Chaparral a 15th Group 1 winner as a broodmare sire.
LOPE DE VEGA has some outstanding statistical data backing up his excellent resume of success.
He currently sits at: In Australasia:
