MAHER and EUSTACE Topple WALLER to Claim Australian Racing Crown

In the 2022-23 Racing Season there was a "changing of the guard" when the CHRIS WALLER Stable was "dethroned" by the highly successful and progressive CIARON MAHER RACING Team (Ciaron Maher & David Eustace), as they claimed the honour of being 58.5 Wins clear as AUSTRALIA’S LEADING STABLE for the 2022-23 Racing Season.

Waller had been enjoying an unopposed run for the past few seasons, however in the previous 2021-22 Racing Season co-trainers CIARON MAHER & DAVID EUSTACE decided to have a crack at the crown and just missed out.

Waller kept the crown in 2021-22 with 352 Wins in front of Maher/Eustace with 321 Wins. To finish only 31 wins behind in the runner-up spot was a feat in itself when Waller started 2,313 runners for a Strike Rate of 15.2% whilst Ciaron Maher Racing Team started 1,612 for a strike rate of 19.9%.

Therefore, Waller had 701 more runners for just 31 more wins.

These results gave the Maher/Eustace team the hunger for the title, and they achieved their goal with incredible success in the 2022/23 Racing Season.

A quick look at the harsh reality of statistical data focuses on what a wonderful season the dynamic duo at Ciaron Maher Racing achieved.

Firstly, we acknowledge that Waller started 442 more runners in 2022/23 than Maher & Eustace.

CIARON MAHER RACING despite being handicapped by their lack of runners, these boys were able to train 58.5 more winners!

Dynamic Syndications were delighted for our Owners who race their horses with the stable, as Maher/Eustace Team trained 20 Wins (35%) of our 58 Race Wins in 2022/23.

In the competitive Australian Metropolitan Trainers Premiership, Chris Waller Racing claimed the title here over Ciaron Maher Racing (Ciaron Maher & David Eustace) but the data supplied is skewered in the Waller stable’s favour.

Waller with 221 wins started 1,862 runners for a strike rate of 11.9% which was a staggering 848 more runners in the metropolitan area than Ciaron Maher Racing Team with 154 wins from 1017 runners, yet Waller could only finish 67 wins ahead.

Whilst 67 Wins sounds a lot on the surface, it must be acknowledged that Waller trained 66 Metro Winners in Brisbane from 447 runners at 14.8%.

Whilst a total of 79.5 wins in Waller’s Australia wide tally came out of Queensland at a Strike Rate of 15.2%.

We all acknowledge Brisbane is an easier grade, and the Waller stable cashed-in on that racing jurisdiction where Maher & Eustace don’t have any presence in Queensland outside carnival time.

The Victorian Trainers Premiership was a one act affair as the Maher & Eustace juggernaut steamrolled their opposition. Whilst they had 342 more runners than their peers, it was their impressive strike rate of 19.3% Winners:Runners that was amazing.

The Melbourne Metro Trainers Premiership was also a domination by the dynamic duo as they had 322 more starters and landed 39 wins ahead of the runner-up Peter Moody. (Further data below).

Their incredible rising success in 2022-23 by Maher & Eustace was highlighted in the NSW Trainers Premiership.

The Maher & Eustace team finished 11th for the season where Waller reigned.

Waller won 176 races from 1,469 runners at a Strike Rate of just 12.0%.

Maher & Eustace trained 65 winners in NSW from just 423 runners at 15.2%.

Waller started a massive amount of 1,049 more runners in NSW than Maher & Eustace team.

We can only imagine the success the Ciaron Maher Team will encounter when they concentrate more in the 2023-24 Season on their Warwick Farm stables.

Whilst the NSW figures are impressive in their own right, it’s when you analyse the Sydney Metro data the figures amaze.

Waller by weight of numbers claimed the leading trainer’s position thanks to starting 1,183 runners at a strike rate of just 11.6%.

Waterhouse/Bott had their best season since commencing in partnership with 71 wins from just 358 runners, a massive 825 less runners than Waller and achieved far better strike rate of 19.8%. They franked their Sydney form in Melbourne as well where they trained 20 Metro Wins at a Strike Rate of 21.3%.

However, CIARON MAHER & DAVID EUSTACE shone in the Sydney metro arena finishing in fourth position, winning 43 races from 284 runners (911 less runners than Waller) at a strike rate of 15.1%.

Sydney Metro Strike Rate Identifies Success of Leading Stables

The number of winners and wins is always important however the one statistical point that all trainers can be compared equally is that of Strike Rate of Winners:Runners as a percentage.

In 2022/23 some stables achieved well beyond expectation, whilst others appeared to have had a quiet season or withered on the vine. We are also aware that some stables have boxes full of Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s whilst others are full of clapped-out VW’s and Hyundai’s.

So, what a trainer achieves with horse husbandry and placement is far more skillful than the scattergun approach of throwing numbers at a race and hoping to achieve success. Especially when considering the Waller stable has first access to the leading jockeys.

A review of the TOP 20 Trainers in Sydney by Strike Rate was quite revealing.

These statistic gives Owners the opportunity to identify stables having the success which owners want to be part of a winning team.

Winning teams have the infrastructure and systems in place to maximise their racetrack opportunities.
