WOW what a way to start 2021 with
a city winner on New Year’s Day!
MAJOR ARTIE winning at Canterbury
Deliberate decisions by Dynamic Syndications, matched with the Wisdom of Gai Waterhouse and the Attentiveness of Adrian Bott, all combined courtesy of a tremendously judged ride by our “go to” jockey Christian Reith, for a Wonderful WIN by our latest city victor MAJOR ARTIE, the 3yo gelding by Artie Schiller from Major Conquest.
We purchased
MAJOR ARTIE for just $37,500 in August from the
Gooree Park Stud dispersal sale of the racing stock of the Estate of the Late Eduardo Cojuangco at the
Magic Millions.
MAJOR ARTIE when we purchased him
Already
MAJOR ARTIE is now considered a
“Free Horse” and all earnings going forward is
“money for jam.”
MAJOR ARTIE repaid our belief in him to
WIN Race 3 at Canterbury on New Year’s Day,
THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE Handicap 1250m a 3YO Maiden event.
MAJOR ARTIE ($14) ridden by
Christian Reith, defeated Law Party ($4.20 fav) by 0.2 length, with For Valour ($4.40) just 0.1 length further back in third place, 0.6 length in advance of Hot Spring Gold ($5.00) in fourth.
MAJOR ARTIE drives to the lead
MAJOR ARTIE at the 50m
This was just
MAJOR ARTIE’s second race start for
Team Dynamic and our wonderfully loyal Ownership Team that race him.
His first start for us was at Newcastle two weeks earlier, where he resumed but was totally luckless that day when an eye catching third, having been locked into a tight pocket behind a wall of horses from before the home turn until the last 100m, and the first two home were off and gone before we saw any daylight.
Christian Reith rode him that day and advised he was desperately unlucky in the run and would also run a trip to a mile and further.
That day we had deliberately left the bilkers off him first-up, as we knew he would be very fresh and potentially over-race in a field that on paper suggested at 1200m, he lacked the gate speed to get to the front and may over-race significantly in behind.
With that race now under his belt for both fitness and the experience remembering to be a racehorse in his first run in 11 months, we were aware that he needed the first race to blow out some internal cobwebs.
Second-up coming into this event,
we were bullish that the horse would run very well. We were confident that on his trackwork he had improved several lengths in both fitness and trackability, and being under lights and needing to be forward on a track that favours on pace horses, now was the right time to put on the blinkers.
However, when the field was declared, the race appeared to be
far stronger than we had expected.
Prior to the race, we anticipated this event will prove to be a significant form reference with the runner-up, third and fourth horses all being touted by form students as high-class horses.
So where does that place Major Arie in the pecking order?
MAJOR ARTIE had opened in early markets as a $10 chance and according to the TAB had significant amount of interest. However, an avalanche of support for the runner-up and several other runners in a good old fashioned betting event, saw our
MAJOR ARTIE drift late to start at the ridiculously lucrative price of $14.00.
Pre-race, stable foreman
Neil Paine was interviewed on Sky Channel and said
“Major Artie will go forward”.
Interviewer Glenn Munsie (TAB) asked: “
about Major Artie, he’s holding his place in the market as a $10 chance and plenty of money for him, and he will go forward with the shades on him?”
“Yes, Christian wants to go forward on him, and Gai and Adrian are happy with that. He was a really good run last start at Newcastle and probably should have won, but just couldn’t get out, but he’s done really well in the stable since, and he’s a good player.”
Behind the barriers with blinkers on the first time,
MAJOR ARTIE was full of energy and sweated-up a little but walked into the machines as quite as a lamb.
As the gates crashed back, Christian drove
Major Artie out of the barriers to take up a forward role however there were a couple that still had a little too much toe, as Little White Lies sped to the lead and For Valour our stablemate came across with that horse from out wide to sit at its girth after the first 150m. At that point Law Party pushed up to head
Major Artie for third place but underneath
Major Artie, half a length back on the fence, was the runner Annual who had drawn the rail and was holding its position.
This beautiful ride and racecraft smarts by Christian Reith, planted the favourite 3 deep without cover early, so its rider allowed it to come back a length giving
MAJOR ARTIE the gun run in the one / one position travelling in third spot. However with blinkers on,
Major Artie was over racing a little and fighting Christian for more rein as our horseman wrestled him to ease back into a rhythm.
Passing the 800m
Major Artie finally settled, but had worked hard the first 450m which would come against him later in the race.
There was no change in the race order for the next 300m until the field passed the 500m mark and the moves began.
Major Artie was full of running and right on our back was favourite Law Party who would have the last shot at us. Leading was Little White Lies on the fence with For Valour at its girth.
Passing the 400m mark on the point of the home turn, Christian angled
Major Artie off the heels of For Valour and allowed him to track up 3 deep. Our horse was sprinting and became a little unbalanced rounding the turn and rolled out four deep into the straight. Christian took hold and got
Major Artie to balance again and then gave chase to the leaders.
Passing the 300m For Valour went for home collaring Little White Lies whilst dropping
Major Artie in third spot but now 3 lengths off the leader, with Law Party one length back to our outside chasing us home.
At the 200m, For Valour was a neck in front of Little White Lies whilst
Major Artie was now half a length away in third spot with Law Party having closed in and was just half a length back to our outside in a really competitive dogfight up the straight.
At the 100m Christian had driven
Major Artie to the front by a head in advance of stablemate For Valour with Law Party a head back on our outside with all the momentum.
It was here things turned ugly and the courage and determination under fire of
Major Artie and Christian Reith came to the fore.
Unfortunately, as Law Party was in full flight, the rider of our stablemate For Valour lost her ability to run straight and its rider failed to straighten up her mount who was laying out under fatigue.
Kathy O’Hara couldn’t steer, and she allowed her mount to run out two horses and twice bump into the hindquarters of
Major Artie, unbalancing our horse, as he was trying to fend off Law Party. That certainly cost
Major Artie valuable momentum and balance at the worst possible time, which allowed Law Party to get closer than it should have at the finish and certainly this waywardness cost For Valour second place as it dropped back to third.
Absolutely no excuses for the beaten brigade, they were not good enough.
For winning this event he picked up
$39,650 being
$28,400 for first plus a $10,250 BOBS Bonus.
MAJOR ARTIE now has a career record of: 4 starts: 1-0-2 and $49,850.
Post-Race, Foreman
Neil Paine was interviewed and said:
MAJOR ARTIE returning a Winner
“Terrific, he had the fitness on his side, which showed the last 100m. He stuck his head out and just kept giving so that was terrific. Gai was straight on the phone to me Gai was very excited, ….. its worked out great for us."
The interviewer than asked
“There were a few people up in the grandstand but not allowed down here, were they your owners?”
“Yeah they were, everyone was cheering, there were quite a few owners here from Dynamic, you know they do a great job Dynamic, so it’s great to see people here today!”
Christian Reith and MAJOR ARTIE return to the Winner's stall
Glen Munsie then interviewed Christian Reith post-race and started by saying:
“Well Christian, at the 75-metre mark where you wanted the Waterhouse and Bott organisation ‘Bone and Muscle’ to kick in, it certainly did there.”
Christian replied
“Yeah it did, look he’s a tough animal. I was a little bit concerned blinkers on today, he wanted to race a little bit fierce the early stages but the deeper we got into the race, the better he relaxed but I always knew he was going to find for me, he was always going to dig deep, he showed that last start, it’s good to get a win today.”
Glen then asked
“Was it your idea to put the shades on him?”
Christian said:
“No obviously not. You don’t tell Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott what to do, they’re very astute what they do, they know what they are doing, and you are always very confident when there is a gear change its going to improve the horse and it did today.”
“The support from Dynamic is fantastic, and I love riding for their syndications and we’ve had a lot of success in the last few months, and it’s good to keep it continuing.”
