But ….. unlike his sire and grand-sire - MERCHANT NAVY Won a Gr1 as a 3yo in BOTH HEMISPHERES !
He’s the heir apparent to his Own Champion Sire and Sire of Sires - FASTNET ROCK
He won the sire-making Coolmore Stud Stakes Gr1 in fast time.
RACE HISTORY: The Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered Ascot Vale Stakes) was first run for 3yo’s in 1969 when subsequent champion sire
VAIN was victorious. It’s roll of honour includes super sires

In 2007 the Ascot Vale Stakes was

“The 1200m dash down the Flemington straight has long been considered a sire making race …Merchant Navy added his name to the honour roll in Saturday’s Coolmore, taking his place in history in spectacular fashion: weaving a passage over the final 100m to catch tearaway leader, Invincible Star, right on the wire. Even better still for connections, Merchant Navy has the pedigree to match his talent for speed.” - www.aushorse.com.au, November 6, 2017
MERCHANT NAVY was then sent to Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle Ireland in an attempt to
become a racetrack immortal and an extremely valuable sire prospect by winning at Royal Ascot.
MERCHANT NAVY achieved this objective. Defying the Southern Hemisphere weight-for-age disadvantage, he Won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes Gr1 1200m.
RACE HISTORY: Established in 1868 as the All-Aged Stakes, it was renamed the Cork and Orrery Stakes in 1926 and its Roll of Honour includes the wonderful
DANEHILL. It was renamed in 2002 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and in 2012 it became the Diamond Jubilee Stakes to commemorate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

Merchant Navy so impressive on European debut (27/05/2018)
Australian superstar Merchant Navy (3c Fastnet Rock-Legally Bay, by Snippets) made a huge splash on his northern hemisphere debut at the Curragh on Saturday.
An unbeaten two-year-old, who went on to win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington in November, the son of Fastnet Rock cruised home to take the G2 Greenlands Stakes by a length.
Bookmakers now make Merchant Navy, who was bred in Australia by Chris Barham, a warm order for the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
"You'd be delighted with him obviously. We felt he was just ready and the whole reason for running him was to see before we went to Ascot,” said trainer Aidan O’Brien.
“We felt that he was at a racecourse gallop stage. The lads in Australia said he was a very good horse, so we just took it totally on trust. He did five little canters, that's all he did.
“Ryan (Moore) was very happy with him. The plan is to go to Ascot for the six-furlong race and I think he has to go after that. I thought there would be a lot of improvement in him. I was just hoping for a nice run today, that's all, so it's all a plus.”
Ryan Moore added: "He's a very good horse to carry a penalty and to get off a plane and come from the other side of the world. He gave me a real good feel and travelled very comfortably. It was a bit of a messy race, we were split all over the place and wanted to take my time a little bit but it was hard to.
"He did it very well because he travelled and cruised and quickened. He has a great attitude."
Global superstar Merchant Navy wins Royal Ascot G1 (24/06/2018)
Australian sprinting star Merchant Navy (4c Fastnet Rock-Legally Bay, by Snippets) proved equally adept in the northern hemisphere when winning the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday.
The son of Fastnet Rock has now won both his Europe an starts since being based in Ireland with trainer Aidan O’Brien.
Merchant Navy settled behind his stable companions Spirit Of Valor and Intelligence Cross in the early stages of the six-furlong contest and held on gamely in the closing stages to deny the fast-finishing French raider City Light in a pulsating finish.
"Merchant Navy was travelling very well and we knew looking at him that Ryan (Moore) was very happy,” said O’Brien.
“I think he was hoping he would not have to get there too early on him. He got a little bit of a bump and Ryan said it took a bit of time to rebalance. We are over the moon with him.
"We were always told that he was only here for Royal Ascot because he has stallion commitments in Australia. That's why we were so anxious to get a run into him at the Curragh, because we knew that we might not have him after Ascot. We will have to see what happens now, but that was the plan as far as I was told. The plan might change.”
Ciaron Maher, the Australian-based former trainer of Merchant Navy, was on hand to savour the victory.
"He's come through our system and was an unbeaten two-year-old and a Gr1-winning three-year-old and now he has come and done it up here as well. He's obviously going to have a good time at stud and be very busy in both hemispheres,” said Maher.
"I have never been to Royal Ascot before, but I thought a testing six furlongs would be perfect for him - and he can run seven, he proved that as a two-year-old. He's got an unbelievable set of lungs, a testing 1,200 metres would be ideal for him.
"He's still developing, he was a later foal, he'd be better again next year - but he'll be off to stud by then!"
Jockey Ryan Moore was equally full of admiration for his mount and added: “Merchant Navy is a remarkable horse. He hasn't been up here long. He has had two starts here and won them both, beating high-class fields, and he is only a young horse.
"I sat third and I didn't really want to be third. I had to go sooner than I would have liked. The race didn't really go to script for anybody I would have thought. I thought I would have won easier but Bound For Nowhere leaned into me and we got very tight, so he lost his rhythm for a second.
"If I had got beat, I would have been very unlucky, but I'm delighted and it's a pleasure to be riding these sort of horses."
Merchant Navy retired to stud (29/06/2018)
Merchant Navy, who proved himself to be one of the best sprinters in the world when winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes-Gr.1 at Royal Ascot, has been retired to stud. An unbeaten Stakes winner at two and a Gr.1 winner over 6f in Australia before transferring to be trained in Ballydoyle by Aidan O’Brien, Merchant Navy is the heir apparent to his multiple champion sire Fastnet Rock.
“He’s a very special horse” stated Aidan O’Brien.
“For a 3yo to come up from Australia and win like he did at the Curragh [Gr.2 Greenlands Stakes] and then at Royal Ascot while being weighted as an older horse is remarkable.
He was actually 12lbs wrong in the Diamond Jubilee. Only a horse with such natural speed and wonder temperament like he has could do it.”
He will enter quarantine in Ireland before travelling to Coolmore Australia where he will cover an outstanding book of mares.
