Fastnet Rock’s exciting young sire son Merchant Navy had
two runners in the time honoured first Australian juvenile
stakes races of the season at Randwick on Saturday with both horses acquitting themselves well with
DRISANA earning valuable Black Type with a gallant second placing.
The
Group 3 ATC Gimcrack (1000m) was won by the race favourite
Coolangatta, who clocked a new class record in running the 1000m in 56.78 seconds, but the run of the daughter of
Merchant Navy named
Drisana to finish second was also
full of merit.
She had a chequered run up the straight but did enough to achieve high praise from her rider Kerrin McEvoy.
“That was really pleasing. We had to duck and weave up the running after beginning a bit slow away but the best is ahead of her,” he said.
Drisana was foaled and raised at Segenhoe as was her sire Merchant Navy and fetched $125,000 at the Inglis Weanling Sale.
She is the first foal of Group 3 winning Sebring mare Broadband, a juvenile winner whose dam is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group 1 winner Anamato, the dam of superstar colt Anamoe.
In the
Group 3 ATC Breeders Plate (1000m) for colts and geldings, the
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained colt Calico Jack finished off his race well to finish sixth beaten just over two lengths by the winner Sejardan.
“Very happy with the run,” said his rider, Robbie Dolan.
The stats on the race proves Robbie’s comment to be an understatement.
He ran home his
last 600m in 34.01 where only the winner ran faster clocking
33.93 just 0.08 faster.
He lost the race at the start through inexperience and when he jumped the stewards’ reports reveals he cannoned into our runner
HARD TO SAY which cost both horses valuable momentum.
Then in the straight, another runner Victory Moments hampered his run to the line when it shifted out.
In the circumstances and the fact he is bred to run further as an older horse the effort was awesome.
“He didn’t really know what he was doing the first half of the race but hit the line very well at the end.”
Merchant Navy has 49 entries for the 2022 Golden Slipper that include both Drisana and Calico Jack.
Merchant Navy
A dual Group 1 winner by Fastnet Rock, Merchant Navy is well priced this spring at a fee of $33,000.
Coolmore Stud appear to have a very exciting young sire on their hands and his progeny appear well above average on what we have seen at the trials and now on raceday.
Dynamic Syndications have a terrific colt by Merchant Navy x Parfaits available right now with less than a handful of shares remaining.

Our Colt under saddle 17/9/21
He is a ½ Brother to Gr1 Winner SONNTAG which makes him the Best-Bred son of Merchant Navy available in his first crop.
Sonntag winning the Gr1 Qld Derby
With Merchant Navy doing the job and our colt being a half-brother to a Gr1 Winner if he can do similar, our colt becomes a genuine Stallion Prospect.
He is with
Ciaron Maher who trained Merchant Navy to win his Gr1 at Flemington.
We are getting very close to completing the co-ownership and now everyone can see the Merchant Navy progeny can run well, we expect these shares which are so well priced at $7,995 per 5% Share to be snapped-up.
