Followers of Dynamic Syndications are aware that we have had a
good opinion of the
first crop progeny of
new sire MERCHANT NAVY – the
dual Gr1 Winner who when
trained by Ciaron Maher won the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington then Coolmore Stud secured him, and he went to
Royal Ascot and won the
Diamond Jubilee for Aidan O’Brien.
MERCHANT NAVY - 2yo Trial Winner
Standing at Coolmore Stud, his first crop yearlings were keenly sought after, and he was the
leading first crop sire by averages in 2021 and as a result they found their way into all the major training stables around Australia.
An
exceptional racehorse, that was
unbeaten at two - before maturing to
win two elite Group 1 sprint races at three,
Merchant Navy retired with
the imposing record of
seven wins and two placings from 10 starts.
A
powerhouse sprinting type, being by
Fastnet Rock with his next two dams
by
champion sires Snippets and Last Tycoon,
Merchant Navy has the
pedigree, performance and physique desired to be a top sire.
On Monday morning the
ATC conducted the
Official 2yo Trials where
9 heats were conducted 5 for colts and 4 for fillies.
The first official two-year-old trials in Sydney are
always a showcase
for the progeny of
first season sires and
Merchant Navy progeny have
something important
in common, that’s the
ability to run.
MERCHANT NAVY was represented by
four (4) 2yo’s at the trials. The heir apparent to
champion sire Fastnet Rock, Royal Ascot hero
Merchant Navy made his presence felt with an impressive heat winner in
Drisana (2f
Merchant Navy x Broadband, by Sebring) and
two more placegetters.
He sired the impressive winner of Heat 8 for fillies named DRISANA (Merchant Navy / Broadband) for Snowden, she
won her heat in 50.30 secs by 0.71 length after getting back in the field to last spot, 3 deep without cover throughout, she sizzled down the outside to win going away. Drisana was foaled and raised at Segenhoe as was her sire Merchant Navy and fetched $125,000 at the Inglis Weanling Sale. (Note: Our Merchant Navy x Parfaits Colt was also foaled and raised at Segenhoe.
In Heat 7 for the Colts, the Ciaron Maher Stables produced CALICO JACK (Merchant Navy / Shrill) who was given an easy time in the trial but worked home nicely the final 200m to run 2nd in a time of 50.60.
Jack Bruce for the the stables advised in an interview that they have
a big opinion of CALICO JACK and the colt may well be there
Golden Slipper horse in the autumn.
In Heat 1 of the day for the Colts,
DIRTY MERCHANT (Merchant Navy / Onemorezeta) did a lot wrong and was very green, drifting well back early, before hitting the line strongly over the final furlong. It was an
eye-catching effort in a fast time of 50.05 secs and the Annabel Neasham trained colt will learn a lot from his morning out.
In Heat 4, Marcelline didn’t trouble the scorer, in what looked a below average trial but her trainer Gary Portelli was interviewed and advised the filly had been
struck in the eye by a clod kicked up around the home turn and the filly lost confidence and rider Rachel King didn’t ask her to extend to the finish after the bad experience.
So what did we learn from this morning’s 2yo trials?
Importantly, these are natural racehorses, that did things wrong through inexperience and a lack of racecraft but the professionals are all taking about how impressive his stock are. How easy they take to training, natural free moving types who will be better as later 2yo’s and early 3yo’s but are precocious enough to head to the early 2yo trials.
The future certainly looks promising for this awesome son of
Fastnet Rock as a sire.
Dynamic Syndications have a lovely MERCHANT NAVY x PARFAITS 2yo Colt who is the half-brother to Gr1 Queensland Derby Winner SONNTAG.
Our Colt is being trained by CIARON MAHER.
Our 2yo Colt
It’s a Fact: He is the
best-bred son of MERCHANT NAVY having the strongest female family and being
one of only 2 colts who were
siblings to Gr1 Winners from his first crop.
He resumed under saddle last week and we were able to grab some snapshots of our youngster going through his paces:
