MUSHAIREB (GB) Finally Worked Out and Set to Fire on Saturday

Imported galloper Mushaireb (GB) has taken a while to be worked out but co-trainer Richard Freedman believes they’ve unlocked what makes the gelding tick and he’s expecting a bold showing in Saturday’s Hunter Valley Premium Meats Benchmark 78 Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle.

Mushaireb, a lightly-raced son of Invincible Spirit, joined the Freedman yard at the start of the year and in his first campaign for the Rosehill-based trainer he chalked up a midweek win and three competitive Saturday grade performances.

Freedman, who now trains in partnership with his brother Michael, says he believes the six-year-old gelding has improved again into this preparation after tinkering with his training and that was evidenced with a solid first-up showing, beaten narrowly in a solid benchmark 88 handicap.

“We figured out with him he likes to be fresh, that’s when he runs his best races,” Freedman said.

“Look at his record, his best runs have been fresh for Gai (Waterhouse), fresh for me, fresh the other day.

“In the past he’s been a bit unpredictable but he’s a horse with ability, that’s taken a while to be worked out.

“He likes his runs spaced and he was very good first-up.

“That’s the key to him. He’s going well the horse.”

Freedman said if Mushaireb was to run well again on Saturday he may even consider having a look at the December feature in Sydney – the $200,000 Villiers Stakes at Randwick on December 14.

“We’ll see what is ahead after Saturday but if he could win then maybe we might look at a race like the Villiers,” he said.

“If he won well on Saturday, we might look at it because it fits in with keeping him fresh.

“There’s been a lot of spring this year. Most of the good horses have had a good spring so it could be a race that comes up a bit soft compared to previous years. It could work.”

Mushaireb is the $3.20 favourite for Saturday’s assignment where he will be ridden by Brenton Avdulla.
