What a day of contrasting emotions Day 1 of the 2020 Magic Millions Sale produced.
The first 60 minutes at the Sales was like being a wake for an old friend, when a sombre, depressive state, hung low in the Gold Coast auditorium.
Was the sky falling? No - but that was the mood as buyers looked pensively at each other almost intimidated, in fear of making any move to buy a horse.
There were a few light jabs thrown but overall, vendors were horrified and buyers were few and far between.
In the first 20 lots to enter the sale ring, 8 left the ring unsold, passed-in by their shell-shocked owners.
However, momentum started to turn and by the 90-minute mark, there was a positive upswing and it was like it was 2019, as the prices started to get on a roll.
By the end of the first day’s session, the average was up to $239,236 ($237,309), the Median was up to $180,000 ($170,000) but the clearance rate was down to 82.86% (89.33%).

Here is Adam Watt giving a recap on a Dynamic Day / Magic Millions Day 1 2020
YEARLING #1
PRIDE OF DUABI ex VORMISTA Colt
It was at the hour mark that Dynamic Syndications made our first move when we purchased
Lot 27 a tremendous looking colt by boom young sire
PRIDE OF DUBAI ex VORMISTA a Gr2 Winning and 3 x Gr1 placed mare. He walked into the sale ring being offered by Coolmore Stud as agent and left the sale ring in the ownership of Dynamic Syndications after a bid of
$80,000 + GST saw the hammer fall.
With $140,000 in our pocket to buy him, this was an unbelievable start to the 2020 sale season for our team.
The Colt is a half-brother to REEMAH – Runner-up in the Gr1 Blue Diamond, one among 5 foals to race = All Winners.
Whilst our colt’s 3rd Dam is NATURAL BEAUTY (by Vain) a Gr3 winner of 5 races – 2 at 2.
VORMISTA from 7 named foals, has had 3 yearlings sell at auction prior to this colt with an All Too Hard reaching $165,000, an I Am Invincible making $440,000, whilst a Deep Field made $260,000 for an average of $236,000.
Whilst he had a high Genetic rating score of
A 329%.
To buy this colt for only two times his 2017 Service Fee of $44,000 including GST was a fantastic result. Subsequent discussions with the team at Coolmore revealed their client who owned the yearling, was a committed seller and Coolmore had been instructed to put just an $80,000 reserve on the colt with expectation that the price would soar past that level. Dynamic Syndications were holding the bid at $80,000 + GST and to our surprise, the hammer fell. It was an extraordinary result representing fabulous buying.
With clean x-rays and endoscopic evaluation, this was a salering bargain and a great way to start the sale year.
YEARLING #2
AIR FORCE BLUE x ANGORA Filly
Two hours later we were back in the thick of the action when securing a fabulous filly for
$100,000 + GST, offered by NSW’s leading boutique stud
EDINBURUGH PARK.
This was Lot 93 a filly by the exciting new sire
AIR FORCE BLUE (by War Front) – a 3-time Gr1 Winning Champion 2YO of Europe in 2015. He stood only one season at Coolmore Stud in 2017 but suffered significant fertility issues and from a good size book of mares only sired 58 Live Foals As a result he has not returned to Australia.
The filly we purchased is from the Stakes Placed mare
ANGORA (by Barathea), a 2YO Sydney Winner who was Stakes Placed in the ATC Reginald Allen H. LR, and 4th in the Illawarra 2YO Classic Gr3 and VRC Great Western H., LR.
The Filly we purchased is a good type by AIR FORCE BLUE but most importantly, from his 56 live foals produced, she was the only genetic rating to reach an
A+++ rating worldwide and an
A+++ rating in the Southern Hemisphere.
Having done our due diligence research on the whole Magic Millions catalogue prior to the sale, this filly surprised us when in our ratings, she scored in the top 5% of the fillies in the catalogue based upon genetic.
When we inspected the filly, she was an extremely athletic individual, that appears on type, to give the appearance she could be a precocious 2yo.
We had $120,000 to buy her, so naturally we were delighted to secure such a high-quality filly bred this way for $100,000 + GST.
YEARLING #3
We always love buying from the King of the Magic Millions
GERRY HARVEY because he backs his yearlings he breeds. This was the case again this year when Team Dynamic purchased Lot 201 for just
$75,000 + GST. A super colt Gerry had bred and raised at his NZ operation WESTBURY STUD and he brought across to Australia to be sold at his Magic Millions Sales.
The colt was by Vinery Stud’s new sire
STAR TURN (by Star Witness) from the mare
COUNTY CORK by Champion Sire Fastnet Rock.
Foaled on the 3rd September 2017, our Colt is from a half-sister to our own Cox Plate hero and now the multiple times Champion NZ Sire
SAVABEEL along with being a half-sister to Gr1, Gr2, Gr3 and LR placed
ARLINGTON.
Our Colt’s 2nd Dam is the Dual Gr1, Dual Gr2, Gr3 and LR Winner
SAVANNAH SUCCESS.
Whilst
Sister Theresa, a Gr1 performed half-sister to
SAVANNAH SUCCESS, is the Dam of multiple Gr1 Winning Champion Racehorse
BLACK HEART BART.
GERRY HARVEY is a loyal and long serving owner with Dynamic Syndications and when he heard Dynamic Syndications had purchased the colt, as Adam Watt went to chat with Gerry about the horse, Gerry said “I’m in that one right?” to which Adam replied “yep - if you want to be!” so GERRY HARVEY will be racing this terrific colt he bred and sold and has now purchased back into with Team Dynamic and the fellow co-owners who would like to join us.
With a strong genetic pedigree rating of
A++ 19,465%
We had valued this colt between
$110,000 + GST and $120,000 + GST so to buy him for $75,000 + GST which is just 3.5 times the sires $22,000 2017 Service Fee was astonishing, especially considering he had been flown the horse to Australia to be sold.
