NEVER has there been a better time to invest in Thoroughbred Racehorses than NOW in NSW.
Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club have announced at that as of 1 October 2016, the minimum prizemoney for Saturday metropolitan races will
increase to $100,000 per race. Under current distribution percentages, the winner of a Saturday Metropolitan Race in Sydney will receive
$57,350 (Up from
$48,250) and that's before the extra $20,000 BOBS Bonus entitlements.
This increase headlines several prizemoney initiatives totaling almost
$53 million annually which has been announced this calendar year, capping off a surge in NSW prizemoney over the past four years.
This announcement is a further step towards achieving a vital component of the Racing NSW Strategic Plan, intended to financially stimulate the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Industry.
The increases are targeted to
invigorate every sector of the racing economy of the State of New South Wales and the benefits will trickle down to
all participants.
“In 2012, total NSW prizemoney was already a staggering
$118.9 million.
After this latest announcement, annual prizemoney in NSW has skyrocketed to more than
$204 million, an increase of $85 million (71.5%) in the past 4 years.

These increases are entirely sustainable and have been fully-funded from the proceeds of the sale of
TV Digital Media rights, Race Fields legislation fees and Tax Parity along with the savings created by the
merger of the Australian Jockey Club and the Sydney Turf Club to create the Australian Turf Club.
Increases to prizemoney are highlighted as follows:
* Metropolitan Saturday minimum prizemoney increasing to
$100,000 per race from on 1 October 2016, up from $85,000 per race. Almost an 18% increase.
* Provincial minimum prizemoney increases to
$30,000 per race on 1 October 2016, up from $22,000 per race. An increase of 36%.
* Country TAB minimum prizemoney has increased to
$20,000 per race or 33% as of 1 July 2016 up from $15,000 per race. An increase of 33%.
* Country TAB Sky 2 minimum prizemoney increasing to
$10,000 per race on 1 October 2016 from $8,000 per race. An increase of 25%.
* An addition of one
extra race, per meeting (up from 7 races to 8 races on a programme) on a selected 20 ATC midweek and night race meetings from 1 October 2016, injecting a further
$800,000 in prizemoney.
* Inclusion at all ATC night meetings of an $80,000 feature race, commencing from 1 October 2016, injecting a further additional
$320,000 in prizemoney.
MINIMUM PRIZEMONEY for Feature Races from 1 October 2016:
Group 2 race prizemoney increasing to a minimum of
$200,000 per race or 14% from $175,000.
Group 3 race prizemoney increasing to a minimum of
$150,000 per race or 20% from $125,000.
Listed Race prizemoney increasing to a minimum of
$125,000 per race or 25% from $100,000.
Inclusion of a
$150,000 feature race on the Melbourne Cup Day programme at Randwick.
Inclusion of an additional
11 feature races worth $150,000, on selected midweek and Public Holidays meetings worth $1.65million.
BOBS bonuses of $20,000 to be added to every Listed Race for two and three year olds.
Country and Provincial Championships qualifying heats to be run for
$150,000 up from $100,000.
Introduction
every fortnight of a $40,000 maiden race at selected provincial meetings.
PROVINCIAL PRIZEMONEY DISTRIBUTION
Prizemoney for provincial races will be increased to a minimum of
$30,000 per race from 1 October 2016. This is an increase of an extra $3,000 per race that follows upon the increase of $5,000 per race (up to $27,000) in prizemoney that took effect on 1 July 2016.
A maiden race carrying $40,000 in prizemoney will be run approximately every two weeks at a provincial race meeting.
Increasing prizemoney to
$40,000 up 33% on thirty (30) restricted country maiden races at selected Showcase meetings around NSW.
COUNTRY RACING
Country racing received an injection of more than
$16 million annually as at 1 July 2016 with increases in TAB minimum prizemoney up to
$20,000 per race and Showcase race meetings carrying minimum prizemoney of
$30,000 per race.
The highly successful
Saturday Metropolitan Highway races restricted to country trained horses, which commenced in October 2015, also now carry prizemoney of
$60,000 per race since August 2016, being more than $2.5 million in prizemoney annually for country trained horses.
The following increases will take effect from 1 October 2016.
Similar to additional prizemoney for maidens on some selected provincial meetings, a maiden race will also be run for $40,000 in prizemoney at 30 Country Showcase meetings. This will add a further
$300,000 in prizemoney each year.
Prizemoney for Country Sky 2 meetings will also see an increase in prizemoney to $10,000 per race from their present level of $8,000 per race, or an annual boost of more than
$550,000.
Country and Provincial Championships Heats
The Country and Provincial Championships have been highly successful for NSW during their first two series, with prizemoney of $2.05 million in 2016.
Prizemoney for the Country and Provincial Championships heats will be increased to
$150,000 from $100,000, a further injection of
$600,000 into these important Series.
