Major studs have been releasing their service fees for 2020 and the high majority of studs are reducing fees to reflect COVID-19 economic variables.
However, one stallion whose genuinely earned an increase in service fee is Newgate Farm’s leading young sire DEEP FIELD (by Northern Meteor) who sees his fee rise from $44,000 to $55,000 in 2020.
DEEP FIELD - Leading Young Sire
Having reviewed his deeds in detail, he is
flying!
A crucial gauge of success for any young stallion is where their achievements can be compared against the very best proven stallions, rather than just his second crop peers.
Newgate Farm’s DEEP FIELD has moved into this elite bracket.
His oldest progeny are just
3yo’s and with this first crop, he’s the
leading sire of three-year-old winners in Australia this season.
His
52 individual winners to date place him ahead of
Snitzel (49), Fastnet Rock (48) and
I Am Invincible (45).
His winners have come from 104 runners giving him a
50% strike rate, which is only equalled by
Snitzel.
His tally of three 3YO stakes-winners is one more than
Fastnet Rock and just two shy of
Snitzel and I Am Invincible.
It’s a fact
DEEP FIELD is performing better than each of the leading Australian sires did at their same stage of their stud careers, based upon number of winners and number of stakes winners.
Only
Fastnet Rock being the exception, and to be fair, he was off to a flying start but did have a far stronger harem of classy mares than
DEEP FIELD received.
The fact
DEEP FIELD has achieved what he has, sets him up well for the future and it’s interesting to review the active champion sires tabled below, to see where they were situated at the same point in their stud careers, compared to where
DEEP FIELD is at today.
Newgate Farm were concerned about market perceptions of raising his service fee in this COVID-19 induced economic climate, but they had a two-pronged agenda for their decision.
Firstly, having served big books in previous two seasons they wanted to limit his book to 180 in 2020 to look after his workload. A rise in service fee creates market forces which will assist achieving that (he already has a book of 140 in the system not including free returns pre-service fee announcement). Again in 2020 he will receive strong shareholder support this season, so Newgate Farm won’t have many outside nominations available for the market.
Secondly, the growing admiration for Deep Field from Owners and Trainers has been reflected at the yearling sales where his progeny this year have averaged
$163,201 (52 sold) with a
median price of $145,000.
It’s important to acknowledge that his 2020 yearling crop were conceived off a
$22,000 service fee which represented
7.4 times return on service fee.
Also, the 2020 yearlings are also from his smallest crop to date of just
107 live foals.
These sales figures are
DEEP FIELD’s best results to date and are up markedly from his 2019 average
$105,444 and his median of
$70,000.
His best result of $800,000 for a colt from Roulettes at Magic Millions gave him a new benchmark as his most expensive yearling and was also the highest priced sale recorded in 2020 for any of his second crop peers such as Rubick and Brazen Beau.
Deep Field covered over
500 mares in his past two seasons, so has big numbers coming through to build on his burgeoning success. This recipe worked wonders for champion sires
Fastnet Rock, Snitzel and I Am Invincible.
Breeders were quick to support
DEEP FIELD last season when his service fee rose
100% to
$44,000 and all markers suggest their judgement has already been vindicated.
Now in 2020 with his service fee up to
$55,000 inc GST, he is attracting a far better harem of mares and evidence reflects there is a great deal more success to come!
When a young stallion has such a rise in service fees, his well-bred fillies in the future will be well sought-after commodities for broodmares upon racetrack retirement.
So, from a yearling buyer’s perspective, in 2020 purchasing a DEEP FIELD filly from the best broodmare with the best pedigree DEEP FIELD covered that season, is a replication of a proven formula and it’s the right investment strategy to minimise risk and offer maximum return.
