Dynamic Syndications 4yo gelding NAVAL COMMISSION (by MERCHANT NAVY from PARFAITS) was back in the winner’s circle on Monday with a 6-length romp over 2100m at Goulburn.
Naval Commission made it a one act affair !
NAVAL COMMISSION had been a dual acceptor in two (2) 2100m events on the day. One at Newcastle in a Class 1 & Maiden and one at Goulburn in a Benchmark 58 assignment.
Our CIARON MAHER RACING trained galloper, was to be ridden by Tyler Schiller at Goulburn and Andrew Adkins at Newcastle.
Believing we could win at either venue, the heavy overnight rain at Goulburn convinced our Team that was the right way to go. Adding into the thinking was the facts of the longer home straight and wider roomy track at Goulburn, as compared to the tight inner layout of the Belmont course at Newcastle, we considered the roomy track would help his action of a long stride.
Despite the race at Newcastle being restricted to Class 1 and Maiden company and obviously much weaker on paper, we elected for Goulburn against stronger opposition.
An absolute duck on Heavy ground, NAVAL COMMISSION never gave his Owners and Connections any cause for concern. It would end up being just a matter of how far he would win by.
The race was all over with 300m still to go, and the Dynamic galloper was allowed to win in a jog-trot-canter across the finishing line, yet still recorded a 5.98 lengths winning margin, with another 1.58 lengths back to third.
On paper, the Goulburn race had a runner named Departing Bullet, that likes to get out in front and run and we considered they might run the race at a genuine tempo but on breeding and form would struggle at the distance. Whilst the Newcastle race had no distinct leader and we could see our horse left in front by default, which is not ideal as we know he is much better chasing than setting a tempo.
So down the highway to Goulburn the team went and brought home the chocolates.
With the inform gun Sydney rider Tyler Schiller in the saddle, our Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained gelding was in a different class to his peers and thanks to a patient ride by Tyler, all he had to do was to remain in the saddle to salute.
Tactically here, we wanted to come out neutral and take a sit, one or two pairs back on the fence and wait until the 400m before making a move to improve and by doing that he should prove too strong and that’s the way the race panned out.
Unbelievably, after scratchings our ratings had us set at $1.50 yet with 5 minutes to the start we blew from $2.40 out to $3.00 in what was bazaar trading as money came heavily for the runner-up Whetu and the fourth placed horse Interventionist which ended up beaten 12.15 lengths. As they jumped the market had NAVAL COMMISSION and WHETU $2.90 equal favourites.
As the gates crashed back in Race 2, the Goulburn Produce Benchmark 58 Handicap, Tyler bounced NAVAL COMMISSION away perfectly from barrier 1 before pressure for the lead was applied by Marigold’s Dream (barrier 2) who was keen for the lead, with Departing Bullet going forward from (7). Whilst this was happening, despised outsider Amy Eckels ($81, barrier 6) tried to go with the leading pair and the early pace in the race was silly as those up front were being ridden as it they were in an Oakleigh Pate rather than a 2100m slog on a Heavy 8 surface.
1400m
As the field thundered out of the home straight making their way towards the back straight Departing Bullet had established the lead narrowly over Marigold’s Dream with a length and a half back to Amy Eckels with a further length back to Whetu on the outside of our NAVAL COMMISSION with another two lengths back to Chaotic Beauty on the inside of Interventionalist.
1200m
1000m
From this stage forward the race didn’t change positions but the two leaders were going far too quick and that pair opened up a margin of 8 lengths over NAVAL COMMISSION as the race thundered past the 1000m and running along to the 800m marker.
800m
Even though the leading pair had broken away, at the distance and at the speed they were running they simply had to hit the wall. So Tyler let them go, knowing he had a lapful of horse under saddle.
At the 700m Tyler just gave NAVAL COMMISSION permission to improve and the pair changed gears and went about closing the margin down.
600m
At the 600m the margin had been reduced to 5 lengths as the field began the swing around the home turn.
400m
As the other riders started to scout wide looking for better going, Tyler was too clever and stuct to be closest to the paint saving valuable ground and spearing off the turn to balance up to the outsider of the leader Departing Bullet who by that stage was going up and down in the one spot.
300m
By the 300m under hands and heels Tyler had driven NAVAL COMMISSION to the front and the race was over.
200m
At the furlong mark, NAVAL COMMISSION was two lengths ahead with nothing coming out of the ruck to give chase. Tyler gave NAVAL COMMISSION one reminder not to switch off and the Dynamic Duo sizzled away putting a gap job on their rivals.
150m
Looking around to make sure nothing was coming, with 150m left Tyler sat up in the saddle and again looking over his shoulders with 100m to run,
50m
Tyler was afforded the luxury to sit up whilst NAVAL COMMISSION went to the line untested with his ears pricked slowing down to a canter for his photo to be taken.
Winning
JOB DONE
Tyler Schiller reported “Nice win by the horse today. I thought he jumped well and there was enough speed, we just let them go. We were able to get along in a nice rhythm which really helps when getting up in trip, that he can go to sleep, and he stays really strong. From the 800m in I just started to work into it, and from the 400m he had pretty much put it to bed. He won really strongly, and I can’t see him any worse over further, so put him up in trip again and I think it will suit really well.”
NAVAL COMMISSION is a lovely staying prospect in the making and for the first time, now with the proper foundations laid down, he has arrived at a trip that he is bred to run. Not forgetting he is a November foal so is only now maturing into his frame.
For those that might not be aware, NAVAL COMMISSION is the half-brother to Gr1 Winner SONNTAG who won the Gr1 Qld Derby (2400m), Sale Cup LR (1600), Ararat Cup (2000) and Macau Hcp (2800). He ran 2nd in the 3200m Andrew Ramsden LR at Flemington, 3rd Ballarat Cup LR 2200m.
He is also a half-brother to RIDGEWOOD DRIVE who won 4 races and was a Flemington winner at 2000m and placed at 2500m.
So sticking like chewing gum to a blanket was never going to be an issue for NAVAL COMMISSION who is showing the stable that the further he runs the better it will be. There is little doubt that 2400m will suit him far better that 2100 did in this event.
To put our earlier identified conundrum into perspective, NAVAL COMMISSION won so easily yet ran the 2100m in 2:14.50 on the Heavy 8 surface at Goulburn. Whilst the race at Newcastle, which was a weaker grade, they could only run 2:17.28. That is 2.78 seconds slower time which equates to approximately 19.5 lengths margin!
NAVAL COMMISSION has been placed to perfection as we built the foundations and his career record now reads 7 Starts: 2 Wins; 1 Second, 3 Thirds & $52,375. Importantly we also paid up for the BOBS Extra Scheme so at distances beyond 1800m he picks up the extra prizemoney.
His win today he banked $13,950 first prize + $5,625 BOBS Extra = $19,575 in not much more than a track gallop.
We look forward to increases in distances and class levels in the coming months.
