Nothing is more exhilarating than Winning ! Whether that is at Royal Randwick or Flemington, a picnic meeting in the Bush or anywhere in between. Winning is Winning !
The heartbeat rises, the adrenaline flows and for just a little over a minute, your life is absorbed by the colour and passion of competitive racing.
Add in the fact the when the horse starts favourite, you have the added burden of expectation.
So when the horse flashes past the winning post, the glory belongs to those whom embrace the sport and the hardships and joys of ownership.
This afternoon, 3yo gelding NOTHIN’ DOING (Haradasun ex Commands Nothin’) did what we all knew he could but we had waited patiently to achieve – Win !
Starting $2.00 Favourite after as much as $3.50 was offered early, NOTHIN’ DOING went about demoralizing his rivals with an all the way victory to record an eased up margin of 1.3 lengths over the 2nd and 3rd favourites who filled out the minor spoils.
To say the win was overdue is an understatement but as they say “Patience is a Virtue” and “All good things come to those who wait”.
NOTHIN’ DOING had shown ability when an early 2yo but we had to be very patient as the son of Haradasun was typical of most of that breed – Very slow to mature. Being from the first crop of the sire, it was hoped that they may have been earlier types but alas that is not the case.
However our horse is out of a terrific family being a son of COMMANDS NOTHIN’ who won the Inglis Classic.
The horse was originally trained in the city but was battling away. A decision to move him to our provincial trainer Darren Smith has worked a treat. A lot happier horse now that he is out in a paddock of a day, away from the hustle and bustle of a city stable, the horse has settled down with his high strung personality and is a lot more relaxed.
Trainer DARREN SMITH
After arriving at Darren’s stable, he was given a soft trial over 900m which he won with ease and then was taken up the line to Muswellbrook to see how he would compete in slightly easier grade. He led in that race over 1400m and looked the winner until nabbed in the final stride to go down by a nose.
The run was awesome and it took an older horse with more experience and a lot less weight to steal victory.
Then we had looked at taking him to Scone next Friday against his own age over 1400m or taking on the older horses at Taree today. We chose Taree with Dale Spriggs to ride. The race was never in doubt. Darren Smith sent the horse up the coast to Taree where he was the pick of the yard. TVN had made him their Best Bet of the Day and the horse did everyone proud with no cause of concern at any stage.
NOTHIN' DOING as a Yearling
Jumping away cleanly, Dale waited for Nothin’ Doing to balance and after 100m, drove our galloper to the lead and when he got there, the horse settled beautifully under the rider and the pair controlled the tempo in front.
Approaching the turn, the pressure was applied by a few runners and Dale slipped Nothin’ Doing some leather and the horse responded and dashed 3 lengths in front at the top of the straight.
This was a winning move as he had those chasing well off the bit. As they approached the 100m mark Dale knew he had the race in safe keeping and allowed Nothin’ Doing to roll to the post a confident horse and to enjoy the experience of winning.
NOTHIN’ DOING won the Stuart Keen CG&E Maiden Hcp on a Dead rated surface which downgraded to slow shortly afterwards. He ran 1:19.82 secs coming home his last 600m in 36.26 which was terrific since he had done all the work, gave most of his opposition weight and was eased down the concluding stages.
The field of 11 runners was stretched out just over 20 lengths first to last.
However the most exciting aspect for our owners was the ease at which the race was won. On the strength of this victory, we would anticipate there should be a few more coming the way of our ownership team. He is getting better with age and we still believe he has a positive future in the years to come.
That was easy ! NOTHIN' DOING relaxes & takes it easy after winning his race on Tuesday
Importantly too was the fact our horse is BOBS Eligible so not only does he pick up the $8,200 first prize but an additional $5,000 BOBS Bonus as well.
Congrats to our Trainer and Jockey and most importantly, the great team of owners:
