FACT:
Now he is the
Leading
FIRST SEASON SIRE in EUROPE
and …. The
Leading
2YO Sire in EUROPE
On Monday in Europe, there were
impressive wins by
GRAND SON OF CALYX
and
Newcomer
NELLIE LEYLAX
.
Firstly,
GRAND SON OF CALYX
was simply awesome when breaking his maiden by
4 lengths
at Saint Cloud in France.
Grand Son Of Calyx (2c Calyx - Asawer)
continued his sire’s exciting start at stud on Monday when running out an impressive winner of the six furlong maiden at Saint-Cloud.
Bred by Barronstown Stud and trained by Gianluca Bietolini,
GRAND SON OF CALYX
had raced with promise on debut when finishing
fourth
to
Myconian
(by
Magna Grecia
). That races formlines stacked up when runner-up The Fixer (by No Nay Never) bolted up by eight lengths next time out.
Grand Son Of Calyx
raced towards the back of the field in the early stages and was asked to quicken upon entering the straight. The 2yo produced a smart turn of foot to sweep past his rivals and led approaching the 200m. Dashing clear, he went on to win by four lengths, with another two and a half lengths back to the third.
Trainer Gianluca Bietolini said
“His sire Calyx has made a very good start as a stallion! I like this colt a lot, he’s very professional and has good acceleration… he will be aimed at the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere”
Secondly,
NELLIE LEYLAX
a Debutant Completes the
Double for
CALYX
NELLIE LEYLAX
(2c Calyx - Lovelocks, by High Chaparral)
completed the double for first season sire
CALYX
when making a smart debut at Beverley.
One of 12 to line up for the Class 2 maiden over five furlongs, the Tom Dascombe-trained newcomer was slowly away, before racing towards the back of the field. The colt showed signs of inexperience when asked to quicken, but the penny appeared to drop approaching the 200m marker, when he produced an impressive turn of foot. Running on strongly, he led close home to beat the favourite by half a length, with another five and a half lengths back to the third.
The Racing Post noted
"an amazing performance to win this. Near the back early after a tardy start, he looked to face an impossible task for most of the way, but he really took off inside the last furlong and swept past the runner-up (who had gone clear)".
There should be a lot more to come from Nellie Leylax. Bred by Glenvale Stud and Edgeridge Ltd, Nellie Leylax completed a double on the day for
Calyx,
with
Grand Son Of Calyx (Calyx)
having earlier won by four lengths at Saint-Cloud.
It continues an exciting start made by Calyx’s first runners, with impressive Newmarket debutant
Persian Dreamer
(Calyx) now a leading Royal Ascot fancy for the Queen Anne Stakes.
Persian Dreamer
(2f Calyx - Surprisingly, by Galileo)
shaped like a serious Royal Ascot contender when making a hugely impressive debut at Newmarket. A €145,000 yearling buy she had been well-supported for the fillies’ maiden over five furlongs, cruising into the lead approaching the final furlong. Pushed along soon after, she quickened clear to score by
three and a quarter lengths.
Persian Dreamer’s
impressive debut saw her crowned a
‘Rising Star’
by the TDN.
Classic Flower
(2f Calyx - Crown Of Flowers, by Garswood)
provided
Calyx with his first success as a first crop sire
when she ran out a convincing winner on debut at Salon-de-Provence.
