It was another
top weekend for
new Sire Sensation JUSTIFY (USA) as he
added another winner and another runner-up to his
rapidly growing tally of success.
Champion Racehorse & Leading First Season Sire in the USA - JUSTIFY
Debutant AUNT SHIRLEY (2yo f Justify x Ambrosia, by Frankel) wasn’t going to be denied of her debut victory on Friday at
Ellis Park (Kentucky), when showing
great courage and digging deep to win by half a length after a match race with her rival down the length of the straight.
Racing over five furlongs on the dirt,
Aunt Shirley sat third on the fence, one pair back and tracked the leader before squeezing through a tight gap to make her move along the rail turning into the straight. The long-time leader tried hard to hold
Aunt Shirley at bay, but the WinStar Farm homebred relished the fight.
Over the final 100m her rival folded, and
Aunt Shirley got half a length in front on the line with the third placed runner a long 7¼ lengths behind her.
It was the first run and win for the filly, who had been working well at both WinStar Training Centre and at Keeneland in the last few weeks.
A great-granddaughter of the great Mariah’s Storm, Aunt Shirley is the second foal out of a three-quarter sister to Galileo’s three-time Group I winner Decorated Knight.
Aunt Shirley’s grand-dam is a full sister to Horse of the Year and champion sire Giant’s Causeway, Group 2 winner and blue hen broodmare You’resothrilling and others. You’resothrilling’s foals include champion runner and Coolmore stallion Gleneagles, also champion Happily and to classic winners Joan of Arc and Marvellous among others.
The pedigree page also includes American Pharoah’s 2022 Group I winner Above the Curve.
Ambrosia returned to Justify the year Aunt Shirley was born and foaled a colt in 2021.
Justify is now the sire of seven (7) winners with two of those winning group stakes and three earning black type.
Then on Saturday at
Del Mar (California), Justify had another debutant named
HAWKER head to the sport. He would eventually finish
runner-up but
wow, what a run. He got checked after 150m, dropped back 6-7 lengths off the leaders, tracked up from the 800m, pushed 5-6 deep around the turn and into the straight and then closed brilliantly to just miss out.
Whilst full credit to the winner who made its own luck to hang on and win there was only one horse you would want to own coming out of the race and that was
HAWKER who had massive flashing lights on him.
Then on Sunday at
Saratoga Justify had 2 debutant daughters compete in the same race. They were
LA MAZEL who finished 4th and
INVEST WISELY who finished a half length further back in 5th.
To use a famous quote:
“Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics.”
Forget the marketing hype. There is nowhere to hide now for the first crop sires as their progeny expose their sire abilities and there can only be one Leader and that’s
JUSTIFY (USA).
In all, 19 of Justify’s first crop have faced the starter in the first 3 months of the new season in the USA and ALL 19 have earned prizemoney: 7 Winners + 8 Placegetters + 2 x 4ths and 2 x 5ths including a Gr2 Winner, a Gr3 Winner and a LR placegetter.
There have been 7 Individual Winners including a Gr2 Winner Statuette and a Gr3 Winner Just Cindy.
Gr2 Winner - STATUETTE
Gr3 Winner - JUST CINDY
Also, he has sired
8 placegetters with five (5) runners-up including Listed placed TAHOMA whilst three (3) have been placed third.
LR Placed and winner TAHOMA
Whilst of his
four (4) unplaced runners, two (2) finished 4th, and the other two (2) both finished 5th. So,
all 19 have picked up prizemoney.
This is an amazing set of stats for any first crop sire, and especially for a sire that as a racehorse was a
middle-distance sensation.
No wonder he is the Leading First Season Sire in North America.
