On Friday afternoon the races were held at Port Macquarie and the
highly promising Dynamic Syndications 3yo staying prospect SAVVY CROWN (Savabeel x Tiara by O’Reilly) was simply awesome when leading all the way to score the toughest of wins in the
Glen Munsie Class 1 and Maiden Plate over 2012m on a Good 4 surface and he ran a
class record time of 2:05.30.
SAVVY CROWN defeating Egyptian Pharaoh and Lime And Sugar
Trained by our Newcastle based horseman Jason Deamer and ridden by jet pilot Ben Looker, SAVVY CROWN was sent out the $3.50 favourite in the field of 11 runners and didn’t let his connections and supporters down.
SAVVY CROWN at the trials
SAVVY CROWN’s task was made more difficult jumping from
barrier 11, up against the
outside fence.
A 3yo taking on the
older horses over
2012m is a difficult enough assignment but that was made tougher by the fact he was also a
Maiden taking on Winners at just his
third career start off a gap of 22 days between runs.
We wanted to lead here, in a race that looked to map without genuine tempo, but as the gates crashed back,
SAVVY CROWN stood flat-footed and he missed the start. Most riders would have jagged back but Ben Looker rode him to instruction. Ben got
SAVVY CROWN to balance and then, clicked him up. The horse responded to be leading the field past the winning-post the first time.
A bit awkward leaving the straight on what is a sharp turn, he crabbed his way around and found the fence again but by now, the field had run along peeling off quick sectionals over the first 400m.
Then as Ben attempted to ease the speed, the second favourite Lucky For Some ($5) rushed forward and sat at our girth, and they continued to peel off several quick sectionals for the trip. Lucky For Some put up the white flag at the 500m mark and Ben showed his class and waited until just before the home straight before asking for the supreme effort.
SAVVY CROWN dashed 2 lengths in front but the hard work and fast pace he had set, started to take its toll. With 50 metres left, he was a length in front but running on fumes. Over the concluding stages the swoopers were attacking but he showed courage and fought off those challengers to score by 0.36 length over Egyptian Pharaoh with a further 0.34 length back to Lime And Sugar in third spot.
It was a big effort for such an inexperienced horse, who is still very much a work in progress. He stargazed a bit through fatigue and inexperience in the home straight, so to do what he did over such a distance, starting from the carpark, leading all the way, taking on older horses and Class 1 level was a terrific result.
We always knew he had ability and those who watched his previous run would be aware he was poorly ridden being stuck without cover 3 deep, 4 deep, 6 deep on the turn and the widest runner in the straight, yet he still kept giving and ran home strongly. Video watches ensured he started favourite and weren’t disappointed.

Connections may be self-isolating, but we wouldn’t be surprised if their shouting and cheering and urging home of
SAVVY CROWN and Ben could have been heard from all around Australia.
