PIERATA is the New Favourite for the EVEREST and ROCK is now being considered for the EPSOM after the champion young sire PIERRO produced both to record brilliant Stakes Wins.
PIERATA
It’s no surprise as both Colts are bred on the incredible PIERRO x DANEHILL Line cross.
The Group 2 ATC The Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday featured several of the leading contenders for the upcoming $14 million the Everest next month and it was five year-old Pierata that emerged triumphant.
A close second at his first run back in the Group 3 ATC Concorde Stakes over 1000 metres, the Greg Hickman trained Pierata appreciated the slightly longer trip to power home for Tommy Berry and defeat Classique Legend with Redzel a weakening third just ahead of Graff.
Pierata ($2.70) unleashed a powerful sprint to beat Classique Legend ($3.10) by a half-length with Redzel ($4.40) holding on to third ahead of the eye-catching Everest hopeful Graff finishing off well for fourth.
Pierata was very nearly retired to stud at the end of last season after winning the Group 1 ATC All Aged Stakes, so the decision to race on is looking like a good one with the stallion now racing in the best form of his life.
"Greg and I were talking and think he's come back bigger, stronger and better and he obviously has," Berry said.
A $160,000 Magic Millions purchase for Greg Hickman, Pierata has the imposing record of eight wins and eight placings from 21 starts with prizemoney in excess of $3.6 million.
"It worked out perfect and he let down really well. He's right where we want him," Hickman said.
"It's all about the Grand Final (Everest on October 19) now. I'll just wait and see how he is and if I think he needs another run, he'll have one and if not he'll be ready to go."
Pierata is a half-brother to Group 3 winning juvenile Ashokan. He is the fourth winner from Group 3 winning Flying Spur mare November Flight, who has a two year-old colt by Rubick that made $900,000 at Inglis Easter and is back in foal to Pierata's sire Pierro.
Pierro has shown himself to be a remarkable source of quality performers, not just classic horses like his Derby hero Levendi and Oaks queen Pinot, but also Group 1 WATC Kingston Town Classic winner Arcadia Queen, who is another top contender headed to The Everest.
PIERATA became the third stakes-winner this season for Golden Slipper winner PIERRO along with ARCADIA QUEEN and ROCK.
Epsom Goal for Pierro’s ROCK
ROCK
A patient approach with progressive Pierro four year-old gelding ROCK paid big dividends at Newcastle on Friday when he stormed into contention for the Group 1 ATC Epsom Handicap with a barnstorming victory in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap.
Drawn wide in the big field of 15, the Team Hawkes trained ROCK settled at the rear and was the widest runner turning for home but unleashed a sensational finishing burst to power home and win the 1400 metre contest by a widening length on the line.
"That was a massive win," said winning rider Tommy Berry.
"I had to go back a lot further than I wanted, so full credit to him, he had a tough run and was the best horse."
Rock has been allowed to make his way quietly through the grades with wins in Benchmark 72 and 74 grade races at his first two runs back from a spell and was cherry ripe for this big step up in grade.
"He had to do it tough even with his light weight, but he's got that explosive turf of foot," said trainer Michael Hawkes.
"He's a good horse in the making and now has a date with the Epsom."
A $130,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft, he runs for a syndicate of stable clients and has the tidy record of four wins and three seconds from just eight starts with prizemoney topping $226,000.
Foaled and raised at Coolmore, ROCK is a full brother to stakes-placed Femme Fireball and is the second foal from winning Fastnet Rock mare Subtitle, a grand-daughter of Group 1 winner Credit Account.
Subtitle has foaled this spring producing a filly by Cox Plate winner Adelaide (IRE).
ROCK is the 18th stakes-winner for Coolmore's Golden Slipper winner Pierro, who is fully booked this spring at a fee of $88,000.
