PURE FAITH 4yo Bay Mare by PIERRO from FAITH HILL (Danehill) repaid the faith of her
loyal Dynamic owners when she broke her maiden with authority, taking Race 3 the
KELLY & ASTILL LAWYERS & ARMATREE HOTEL 2020 LEN KELLY MEMORIAL TONS OF FUN Maiden Handicap 1200m on a Heavy 8 surface at Gilgandra on Saturday afternoon 8/2/20.
Trainer Brett Cavanough can “Take-A-Bow” on an outstanding piece of horse husbandry in nursing PURE FAITH back to full fitness from the debilitating injury of bone bruising.
Greg Ryan rode the race we expected from a leading professional jockey when box-seating in the one-one on the $1.50 favourite and the rest is history as
PURE FAITH repaid her owners and punters alike by
winning eased down by a widening 2.41 lengths with a further 2.35 lengths back to third spot.
PURE FAITH has a HUGE black-type, highly commercial pedigree but injury had curtailed her race performances to date.
After her first 5 race starts there were 5 duck eggs on the score sheet, despite two fourth placings the residual value of
PURE FAITH was taking a battering as commercial breeders want to breed from winners.
Also walking a tight-rope with past injuries, we were keen to get a result as soon as possible this racing preparation.
It had started with a superb barrier trial at Newcastle with a 3.7 length romp over 800m.
Stable and owners were upbeat that she would run well when resuming at Wyong, but things didn’t go to plan over the 1000m and with only the one barrier trial under her belt, fitness also was against her and she weakened to run fourth.
So, after a
pow-wow with “Cav” we elected to do a job and get the win on the board.
However, typical of most things in racing, nothing is ever easy nor seldom do things pan out as expected.
Dynamic had entered both PURE FAITH and her Dynamic stablemate YAWKYAWK both trained by Cav into two races for the Saturday being this maiden event at
Gilgandra and a non-tab event at
Walcha and it was our intention to run each horse where we thought they would be best placed to win after considering riders and barrier draws.
We declared Greg Ryan as our rider on Yawkyawk after she had drawn barrier 7 and
Pure Faith drew 12.
We didn’t declare a rider for
PURE FAITH at Gilgandra, as the bad draw made it more difficult, so it was not our intention to race there.
At Walcha,
PURE FAITH was better placed having drawn barrier 8 and we had
Leanne Henry booked to rider her there.
Leanne rides her a trackwork and rode her in her barrier trial win. So, we didn’t declare a rider on Yawkyawk at Walcha because she had Greg Ryan at Gilgandra.
When we went to bed on Friday night, we were confident that
PURE FAITH would get the chocolates at the non-Tab race at Walcha and at the Sky2 meeting at Gilgandra,
Yawkyawk was very well placed with Greg Ryan in the saddle.
Early Saturday morning everything changed.
Yawkyawk hadn’t eaten up overnight and had a slight temperature spike. Knowing that we would be running on rain affected ground, Cav rang and suggested we should scratch as he didn’t want to risk Yawkyawk as it may be suffering the early effects of a virus and that if she raced in the wet, it was likely it would derail the rest of her preparation, which we agreed should happen.
As for
PURE FAITH,
we would still head to Walcha.
As we would scratch Yawkyawk, Greg Ryan would become available and we could have booked him to ride
PURE FAITH.
However, as the race was still so much weaker at Walcha, we still thought that’s the best way we should go.
Whilst we were discussing this on the phone, notification came through that Walcha had been
postponed due to heavy rain.
So, we had the
back-up plan for PURE FAITH and with
Yawkyawk unable to compete, we simply
swapped Greg Ryan across to ride PURE FAITH.
We had drawn barrier 12 of 14 at Gilgandra but that was offset by heavy rain and after scratching’s we jumped from barrier 10.
The track was downgraded at Gilgandra from a soft 6 to a
heavy 8 as morning rain continued to fall.
On paper the speed map had us capable of leading with no designated speed in the race, so the plan was to roll forward from out wide and be in the first few on settling and whether we led or trailed the speed would be decided after the first 150m.
As the field jumped away, it was a mad scramble to lead, as every runner wanted to go forward.
Greg showed his class and experience and kept pushing on and after 200m, the field started to spread. A couple of horses went really hard, driving to the lead and others couldn’t match the tempo.
Greg allowed it to unfold and then angled across to get the perfect run in the one-one spot, where he stayed until the 300m before angling out and then, swept to the front 4 deep on the track, quickly reeling in the leaders before asking
PURE FAITH to extend and our mare responded hitting the front and kept going to
score with ease.
Phew ! Pressure Off - Job Done.
Circumstance, horse husbandry, horse management, pre-planning, flexibility plus a clever and patient ride, matched her obvious class advantage. Despite being unsuited by the heavy track, her record of unplaced in 5 starts was instantly wiped from her pedigree page to be replaced with Winner at 1200m.
It may have only been a Sky 2 Country maiden however the result was far more significant to her owners who now have a highly desirable broodmare when she retires.
