What a wonderful result for the DYNAMIC / CIARON MAHER Team as our 3YO Filly RED HOT LIZZIE (HELLBENT x ANNA LIZZIE) faced the starter for the first time in 49 weeks and just her second career start. She was presented in magnificent order by the stable, and accordingly, our filly gave nothing else a chance under a tremendous steer from Jet Pilot TIM CLARK who took control of the race from the start and led throughout to claim a terrific win.

For all the due diligence work we do; analysing catalogues, inspecting horses, having them vetted, and valuing them, then bidding in a competitive auction environment, buying them, organizing all the administration, breaking-in, educating, training and racing horses, sometimes there are just “No Rules” as to how success can be achieved.
This is the story for RED HOT LIZZIE.
A 3yo filly that has successfully come back into training after suffering stress fracture that required a long recuperation, hence the reason for the delay of 49 weeks between runs.
We always had a big opinion of the filly’s ability, but she was a gangly, raw individual that needed time to build into her frame.
Now after two race starts, her record reads 2 starts: 1-0-0 & $40,800 after banking today’s $29,550 + $11,250 BOBS Bonus.
A fair return for a filly by HELLBENT from a stakes-placed mare. An even better return since we paid just $10,500 + GST for the filly from the Magic Millions.
Followers and industry supporters will remember that in 2022, Magic Millions had a client well known to them in Rob Ferguson, a previous part-owner of the Magic Millions company, who had just undergone medical treatment and was under the effect of medication. He hopped online at their June yearling sale and purchased 22 fillies sight unseen.
The story goes:
At the National Yearling Sale in June 2022, a total of 22 yearlings were knocked down to “Louis Bloodstock,” a new name on the results sheet that became the leading buyer.
Magic Millions were concerned and pulled the credit on the buyer, because at the time, they were not aware who they were dealing with through the anonymous aspect of online sales.
They would later learn that the buyer was former Magic Millions proprietor Rob Ferguson, with Louis being the name of his dog!
Over a three-hour period, Louis Bloodstock spent nearly $1 million on 22 fillies.
Ferguson subsequently revealed to the press that he had experienced a 'medical episode' after being weaned off strong steroids by his doctor, following a lung condition. One of the side-effects of this process are feelings of invulnerability and euphoria.
“It is like having been at the Magic Millions bar all day and then deciding to buy some horses. It felt like a great idea at the time," said Ferguson.
Ferguson had been a successful racehorse owner, and the former owner of Torryburn Stud. He was a 25 per cent shareholder in Magic Millions up to the Gerry Harvey buyout of John Singleton in 2011.
While Ferguson promptly settled his debt for the fillies with Magic Millions, Ferguson decided to re-offer them, unbroken, at the Magic Millions Online Sale from September 5 to 9 with a reserve of 50 per cent of their purchase price.
“It was just one of those things that happened. I’ll probably end up famous because of it," he joked.
The 22 fillies, were made available for inspection at the Gold Coast Sales Complex throughout the week of the online sale.
"I have had some feedback from a few good judges who have seen the horses and they tell me that there are some nice fillies in the group. So, I may not have done too bad a job,” said Ferguson.
Since the National Sale, all fillies had been agisted at Warrandale Stud.
A vet was employed to carry out a clinical and a laryngoscopy examination of each horse on arrival at the Magic Millions complex, and the reports of the vet’s findings were posted on the Magic Millions sale pages.
“Obviously, it looks like I am going to show a loss, as I’m willing to take a haircut on each horse. But it was never my intention to own these horses.
"When I purchased these fillies, I am sure I made a lot of vendors happy. This time around I will probably be making a lot of buyers happy.” Ferguson quipped.
Dynamic Syndications went through the 22 fillies being offered by pedigree genetics, then physical inspection. We identified only two (2) of the 22 yearlings which we considered were potential purchases for us, then arranged for our vet Dr Tim Roberts to inspect these and he passed both.
One was the Trapeze Artist Filly from Wowee and the other was the Hellbent filly from Anna Lizzie. At the reserve price of 50% of the Yearling price we had to have a crack.
As fate would have it, Dynamic Syndications purchased both.
PIGGYBACK
The Trapeze Artist x Wowee Filly was purchased for $27,000 + GST and we named her PIGGYBACK. She’s had: 6 starts = 3:0:1:1 and Prizemoney: $173,200. She has won at Randwick over 2000m, Gosford, Orange and been 3rd at Newcastle and fourth at Flemington.
RED HOT LIZZIE
Whilst the HELLBENT x ANNA LIZZIE filly was purchased for only $10,500 + GST and after this win, RED HOT LIZZIE has earned $40,800 and is a winner at Canterbury and ran 6th on debut at Kembla.
RACE REVIEW:
We had drawn a little sticky in barrier 8 of 12 but after 3 scratchings, we jumped from barrier 7 of 9. We identified that of the information we had on the field of maidens, that there wasn’t any designated speed.
So, with one of Australia’s best judges of front riding tempo in the saddle, we felt it was better to roll forward and take up the running and slow the tempo into a sit and sprint than to be trapped out deep facing the breeze and covering extra ground. Also, with 58.5kgs in the saddle, we wanted to give her a breather if possible mid-race since she was returning after such a long time away from the sport.
The CIARON MAHER Team had done a wonderful job with our filly, and she looked tremendous in the parade. Earlier when markets opened on Monday, she had opened at $11 but was well supported in betting, firming into $5.00 second favourite, behind the Waller runner Canpikapony who had James MacDonald, barrier 3, and only 56.0kgs.
Our intent was to cross it, drop anchor and make it chase us as we kicked off the home turn.
The race panned out perfectly.
RED HOT LIZZIE jumped away evenly with the field, but after 50m Tim Clark pushed the handlebars down and she worked forward to lead. Minnehaha Falls and Canpikapony tried to push up and hold us out, but they didn’t have the necessary speed and Tim was able to move over and find the fence after the first 200m. Passing the 800m the race field was spread out, with RED HOT LIZZIE a comfortable leader, a length and a half over Canpikapony and Minnehaha Falls travelling together, with 10 lengths covering the field.
Passing the 400m, Tim had the two runners who were tracking him off-the-bit, and the rest looked in trouble. Swinging into the home straight, Tim waited until the 250m and then pushed the “go button” and worked 2 lengths clear of Canpikapony.
Passing the 100m nothing had changed, and our filly, despite the early work to cross and the 58.5kgs still had a 1.5 length break on Canpikapony who couldn’t answer the challenge.
Tim just kept our filly going to the line whilst the runner-up Bauhinia worked home from back in the ruck to take second beaten 1.4 lengths, with Canpikapony a tired third, 1.93 lengths off our filly.
Job Done!
Brad Gray from Sky Channel then reviewed the race: “a tough, on-speed win, a horse we hadn’t seen for a year, and there was market support for her all-week, and that was justified, wasn’t it, on the back of a nice ride there from Tim Clark. You thought that Canpikapony once she peeled off the back of the eventual winner was going to make a challenge, but she just weakened out of it a bit, and will come on from that, and Bauhinia made a mess of the start and hit the line, but all honours to the winner. You do everything right and you get the result.”
Then Sydney stable foreman “Aussie Jo” (Johann Gerard-Dubord) was interviewed by Chantelle Buckley who said: “That was an impressive first-up performance from her.”
Joh responded, “Yeah that was very good. She has always been showing a bit of talent, but she’s taken a bit of time. The owners have been very patient. She is another one very well found by Dynamic, she was a very cheap buy, and they are good at finding those type of horses.
“Obviously from that gate, Tim decided to push forward instead of getting caught wide, and once she was in front, she was able to control. It’s the type of track where that’s a big help, and yeah she was able to give a good kick and she was good late.”
Chantelle then asked, “Why the big gap?”
Joh answered: “Yeah, she pulled-up only fairly from a trial, and we weren’t 100% happy with the way she was moving. So, we just gave her a bit of time. As you can see, she’s a big girl, she had plenty of furnishing to do, and instead of rushing her, we just wanted to be fairly patient.”
Chantelle then said to Brad Gray: “Nice effort to do that off a lengthy break Brad.”
Brad responded, “Yeah, absolutely, and they were there to beat her at the finish, but to her credit, she just kept fighting on the line. I don’t think it’s a filly that Tim has had much to do with in the past, but we will get Tim’s impressions there, but I think first impressions, will be lasting impressions, with her Tim – a nice win first up.”
Tim answered, “Yeah, obviously a lot of credit goes to the team behind Ciaron to have her well prepared today. To be able to have the confidence to ride her like that, and even though she was a long time between runs, to know I was going to be on a horse that would be strong late.”
Brad then said: “Halfway down the straight it was pretty much anyone’s race, there were a few horses coming out to make their challenge, and she found on the line.”
Tim answered: “Yeah, I wouldn’t say she showed an electric turn of foot when I asked her, but the one thing she did do, when she got to her top speed, she maintained that, and held that all the way through the line, so it was an encouraging first up effort.”
