Redoute’s Choice was crowned Champion Australian Broodmare Sire by earnings in 2021-22 and this was the third time claiming the title, pipping his old nemesis Encosta De Lago. These same two sires have featured in the top two of the broodmare sire rankings since 2017/18.
REDOUTE'S CHOICE at Arrowfield
It’s often considered that great sires will be great broodmare sires, and a quick glance through the last decade confirms it. In Australia, the Champion Broodmare Sire title has been won by Redoute’s Choice, Encosta De Lago, Zabeel and Danehill.
Long gone now but still on top, the loss of champion sire REDOUTE’S CHOICE on the 26th March 2019 was felt among the Australian Thoroughbred Breeding Industry, for both his ability to sire top selling yearlings, champion racehorses and his ability to make a legacy as the Sire of Sires.
However, it’s his daughters ability at stud to uplift their progeny, that saw REDOUTE’S CHOICE yet again claim an Australia Champion Broodmare Sire title.
During the past season, Redoute’s Choice mares produced:
294 Winners, 16 Stakes Winners inc 5 Gr1 Winners and Prizemoney Earnings of $29,491,158
The best racehorse last season from a Redoute’s Choice mare was Hitotsu who earned $3,171,250

BRADBURY'S LUCK (Dynamic Syndications Magic Millions winner)
With this prior knowledge of just how good REDOUTE’S CHOICE is as a broodmare sire, its timely to look at our SHALAA x DARBY’S BID (by Redoute’s Choice) now 2yo Colt.
OUR COLT under saddle
Our colt is being trained at Rosehill by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou.
GERALD RYAN & STERLING ALEXIOU are Co-Trainers of the colt at Rosehill
Bred by Gerry Harvey and offered for sale at the Magic Millions, this colt was an athletic standout and we loved his action and temperament at the sales.
GERRY HARVEY bred the colt
Lacking a little bit of black-type up close on the pedigree page did reduced his overall commercial value, which in a hot market proved to be a bargain buy for us.
However black-type whilst important, is only part of the overall equation on a colt.
The most important aspect for a colt is genetic balance. That’s how does the sire line and the broodmare sire line perform when crossed as compared to the foal crop as a whole.
Our COLT in the spelling paddock at Gooree in July
This is where the SHALAA Colt ex DARBY’S BID Colt excelled.
SHALAA as a racehorse was the Champion 2yo of England and France in 2015.
SHALAA at Stud
He stands at Arrowfield Stud at a Service Fee of $33,000.
Now he is a highly successful young sire of champion sire INVINCIBLE SPIRIT.
SHALAA finished runner-up to CAPITALIST in the Second Crop Sires Premiership by winners and by Stakes Winners with 53 Individual Winners including 3 Stakes Winners and over $3.7m in earnings.
INVINCIBLE SPIRIT it should be remembered is the sire of I AM INVINCIBLE who was crowned Champion Australian Sire of 2021-22.
It’s now important to recognise that INVINCIBLE SPIRIT has an genuine affinity with Northern Dancer line broodmares where 80% of his Gr1 Winners are bred this way.
Whilst there are 68 Stakes Winners bred by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and his sons and grandsons out of DANZIG / NORTHERN DANCER line broodmares.
So, we know the cross our colt is bred upon is highly successful at producing elite racehorses.
But Wait ! ….. There’s More !
DARBY’S BID – is a daughter of REDOUTE’S CHOICE who was crowned Champion Broodmare Sire last season for the third time in his career.
As a young sire, SHALAA has produced 10 Stakes Winners, 4 Stakes Winners in Australia to date, including his best son named SHAQUERO who won the Magic Millions Pago Pago and Breeders Plate.
SHAQUERO winning the Magic Millions
SHAQUERO is a son of NOT A SINGLE DOUBT who is a son of REDOUTE’S CHOICE.
On our genetic rating scores, SHALAA (by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT) over DARBY’S BID (by REDOUTE’S CHOICE – a Son of Danehill – a son of DANZIG – a son of Northern Dancer) has an outstanding opportunity to produce highly successful racehorses.
Werk International Rating Score: A 1,049%
GEONICK Geographical Aust Rating Score: A 369%
Genetic Quality Rating Score: Q7
Whilst on conformation, size and scope, our colt is an Equine Adonis.
Well grown, tough and moves like a Rolls-Royce not a clapped-out VW.
ADAM WATT & GERRY HARVEY at the sales
Bred by Gerry Harvey who is a great supporter of Dynamic Syndications, when he heard Dynamic Syndications being announced as the buyer in the salering, shortly after Gerry spoke to Adam and asked if he could buy back into the colt as he was such a nice type and he had not had a days concern since foaling all the way into the salering.
Gerry had mapped out the breeding plan and mating of his mare Darby’s Bid to Shalaa and was keen to stay involved, believing he had produced a superior equine athlete.
Our COLT in training - 21 July 22
Adam asked how much he was wishing to own, and Gerry said he’d be happy to take "a leg" (25%) which was agreed.
DEAN WATT - GERRY HARVEY - ADAM WATT
It’s always a fantastic endorsement of a product if the breeder such as Gerry Harvey is happy to back his judgement and buy back into a young horse for such a "big lick."
SHANE ROSE aboard our SHALAA x DARBY'S BID Colt in January with ADAM WATT
We invite you to own and race this colt with Gerry Harvey and Gerald and Sterling.
OUR COLT in April 22
All the boxes have been ticked in our favour. Type, Genetics, Top Trainers, Breeder Endorsement, Clean X-Rays and Grade 1 Scope and finally, a terrific value for money price per share.
