The Gr1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (1600m) for the fillies (French 1000 Guineas) was won by an Aga Khan homebred, a LOPE DE VEGA filly named ROUHIYA, who was having her first try in a Black Type race.
ROUHIYA wins the Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches
Rouhiya's victory in the Gr1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches provided a perfect illustration of the Aga Khan's maxim that “racing and breeding racehorses is a game of chess with nature.”
Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, said, "You make your plans, and I knew she was in top form so it’s marvellous. Last year when she won at Deauville, I knew she must be good because of the way she finished. This filly has really become much stronger and when it came to D-day, she was there for us."
Just a month ago, Rouhiya finished third in a conditions race at Longchamp. She had a win and a placing last season and was third. Second-up here she rose to the challenge of this Group 1 assignment.
Rouhiya had flourished since her resumption run, and returning onto better ground, produced a decisive turn of foot under rider Maxime Guyon to run down the Kathmandu. Fellow visitors Vespertilio and Romantic Style were a head and a short-neck further back.
ROUHIYA Returning to the Winners Circle
"It took a long time to get her out this season because she's a real good-ground filly and unfortunately I ran out of time, so had to run her here on tacky ground in what was really the last option," said her trainer Graffard.
"But she came on a bundle for that run. I really hesitated before committing to this race, but Princess Zahra [Aga Khan] said to me that there’s only one Poule d’Essai and that we should try our luck. It’s my first Group 1 win for the Aga Khan and it’s a Classic, with a filly I’ve always loved."
Asked whether Rouhiya will be asked to step up to 1m 2½f (2100m) in the Longines Prix de Diane, Graffard said: "I don’t know, she might stay further as she's a filly that can drop the bit and relax. We’ll discuss it among the team and in the meantime enjoy the victory."
With the Sangster family colours on Kathmandu looking certain for victory, Rouhiya dived through late between runners to snatch a narrow victory.
Graffard said: “We weren't well drawn, but Maxime got a good position very easily and latched onto the back of the Godolphin horse (Romantic Style), and then I thought we had an obvious chance. I thought coming in we were in business; Maxime waited a while, but Rouhiya really picked up well. The ground made a huge difference and she had come on loads for her prep run,”
Rouhiya is entered in the Gr1 Coronation Stakes and bookmaker Paddy Power cut the daughter of Lope De Vega from 50-1 into 33-1, while bookmaker Coral were more impressed and go 12-1.
Rouhiya is the second winner from stakes-placed Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality) mare Rondonia, a half-sister to Gr2 winner Raydara from stakes-winner Raydiya.
