SAINT OF KATOWICE (IRE) (5yo B. g by ELZAAM from SILESIAN (IRE)) ridden by leading rider
Jamie Kah, and carrying Top Weight of
62.0kgs, produced a
one act affair, as Jamie steered our
$2.50 favourite straight to the lead from the
outside marble, and just kept improving on her position
to win, under a
hands and heels romp, by an
eased down but still widening
2.8 lengths margin over runner-up and second favourite Lunares, with third favourite Vidiano finishing in third spot some 4.5 lengths behind
Saint Of Katowice.
SAINT OF KATOWICE - light on his feet !
Trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace Saint Of Katowice won Race 7, the 50 Year Life Member – Anthony Lloyd Benchmark 64 over 1500m at Sandown on the Hillside course.
A one act affair !
Unexpectedly, we had brought
Saint Of Katowice up from Melbourne to Sydney to aim at some nice Benchmark races on the Friday night circuit at Canterbury.
But despite his form on Soft ground reading
7 starts for 3 wins a second and a third, he is a horse that doesn’t like getting his toes wet and prefers to be on top of the ground.
As we all know it just doesn’t stop raining here in Sydney. We had found a good surface for his first Sydney assignment, but he just rolled along a bit of a quick tempo, when tiring over 1550m when fourth by
1.9 lengths in a much tougher benchmark 78 grade race.
In Sydney, he was nominated to run last Wednesday at the
Kensington track, but those races were
washed out.
So, his next assignment was at Hawkesbury on Thursday 24 March, in a Bm68 where he would have been hard to beat on a dry track, but the weather forecast was for more rain and a heavy surface.
As an
insurance policy, we also held a nomination at
Sandown on the Wednesday 23/3 meeting over
1500m a Benchmark 64 event, where we were asked to
carry 62.0kgs but the track was going to be a
Good 4 surface.
So,
we accepted at Sandown to look and see and
drew the visitors draw of 12 of 12.
Despite the awkward draw plus the big weight, it was the track surface and the long straights convinced us this was
still the right option, so on Monday night he was put on the truck back to the Ciaron Maher Melbourne Stables to race on Wednesday.
This is
a major advantage for us at Team Dynamic, to be able to
move horses up and down the highway in search for the
right races and we are getting used to the travelling requirements, which we are now using to our advantage.
TEXCEL
MAJOR ARTIE
To prove the point, it’s a fact, this is the third (3rd) Melbourne Metro Winner we have had in a week, after TEXCEL won the previous Wednesday at Sandown and then Major Artie won at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
We had fleetingly considered taking a
2.0kg claim for an apprentice rider for weight relief, to get his weight back down to 60.0kgs, however having the skills of
Jamie Kah available, who we felt would ride our horse with better balance, and who could judge tempo better than her peers, it was considered a
“no brainer” to carry the weight of 62.0kgs to have Jamie sit in the saddle.
As a Benchmark 67 rated horse off his most recent run in Sydney, we felt he was actually 0.5kgs under the equivalent weight for that grade in Sydney, where he would have been asked to carry 62.5kgs.
Plus, he was dropping a long way in class from a tough Benchmark 78 right back down to a Benchmark 64 grade.
So, to us he wasn’t poorly handicapped and to have Jamie Kah on top, and then on exposed form, we had him rating as an odds-on hope and to get $2.50 was luxury.
That’s how it panned out, as it read on the speed map.
The instructions were simple, go to the front, take bad luck out of the equation.
SAINT OF KATOWICE & JAMIE KAH - AIRBORNE !
Jamie and Saint of Katowice did the rest.
At the 200m
At the 100m
At the Winning Post
Leading at all sectional splits having worked across from out deep over the first 100m, then held in a balanced rhythm until the 400m before Jamie slipping him some rein,
Saint of Katowice powered away. The margin could have been a lot further had the button been pushed, but there was no need, as nothing was close to him and
Jamie Kah was afforded an armchair ride to the post.
