Bred to run 2000m, by Cox Plate and Spring Champion hero
SAVABEEL out of a Pins mare Swarovski,
SAVAPINSKI has always indicated she has had untapped ability.
Savapinski (Christian Reith) at Randwick 7/10
So our team were delighted to see the mare run a fabulous race to finish 4th in the Gr3 Angst Stakes 1600m at Randwick on Saturday.
At her first preparation she had just the one start when winning on debut at Newcastle.
Tipped out for a spell, Savapinski resumed in a mid-week event at Canterbury when hitting the line strongly for a fourth over an unsuitable 1200m dash.
Then straight to 1600m second up she won in a small field but class shone through and won easily as a $1.35 favourite should.
Two weeks later she was off to Gosford over 1600m where a pre-race $1.35 favourite however coming off the float at the track she twisted her shoe and stood on the nail puncturing her sole and as a result was a late scratching.
A few easy days to get over the bruising she was aimed at a 1600m Class 2 event at Hawkesbury and started a $1.35 favourite again and won again in a soft fashion.
Gai Waterhouse has always expressed that she believe the mare was a potential Black-Type mare once she gets her out to her right trip of 2000m.
We had earlier identified that over the Spring Carnival in Melbourne, there is
a nice race - the Matriarch Stakes Group 2 over 2000m for Mares at Set Weights and Penalties on Emirates Day the final day of the Carnival to be held on 11 November.
However we were not getting too far ahead of herself. Savapinski would have to prove herself worthy of the trip south.
Last week we had two options – run in a Benchmark race at Canterbury over 1900m where she would start favourite or
throw her in the deep end over the shorter 1600m in the Group 3 Angst, against two of the best mares in Australia at that trip –Dixie Blossom and Daysee Doom.
We considered all the options leading into and out of these races and despite our mare Savapinski having not raced at mid-week level at a suitable distance let alone Saturday class, and yet here we were going straight to Gr3 class over now an unsuitable trip, it was considered necessary to determine her level of ability knowing she was crying out for more ground.
Further under the Set Weights and Penalties, she was being crucified at the weights.
Savapinski with Christian Reith aboard on her way to the barriers
Under the Benchmark handicap system
Savapinski was a 73 rated mare.
Eventual race winner
Dixie Blossoms was a 106 rated mare and runner-up Daysee Doom was a Benchmark 107 Rating.
Savapinski returns after the race
Savapinski at a 73 rating, under the True Handicap System was a massive
34 rating points lower which equals 17.0 kilos she would receive less than
top rated Daysee Doom and 16.5kgs from winner Dixie Blossoms.
However here under this weight scale, Dixie Blossoms and Daysee Doom both carried 57.0kgs whilst Savapinski carried just 3.0 kgs less at 54.0kgs.
So technically, we met Daysee Doom 13 kilos worse than we should and Dixie Blossoms 1.5kgs worse.
With the old adage of 1.5kgs equal to a length, then in the distance equation we met Daysee Doom 8.5 lengths worse.
Savapinski finished 2.5 lengths behind Daysee Doom, therefore Savapinski out-performed her benchmark rating by 6 lengths or under the weight terms, she ran 9kgs better than her rating.
Gai and Adrian are adamant she can find several lengths improvement with the application of blinkers and of course be a lot stronger at the end of 2000m than the sharper 1600m.
Dean Watt with the Savapinski owners in the Owners Room having a chat post race about future racing options
We have several options going forward with
Savapinski with the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes 2000m on the 11th November appearing a preferred target.
Savapinski is likely to have one further start before then with a 2000m Benchmark 85 race at Randwick on 28 October or a Benchmark 75 at Canterbury over 1900m potential targets but also there are two other races to be considered in Melbourne being the Group 3 Tessio Stakes over 1600m for mares at Moonee Valley on 28 November still a possibility but may find that race a little difficult to secure a start due to her lower benchmark rating however on the same programme there is a Benchmark 85 over 2040m event.
So time will tell however
Savapinski will tell us how she progresses as to which of these races (if any) will be her next assignments.
The other options available to us is staying put in Sydney and running through her classes or head to the spelling paddock after her next start with the view of some of the stakes races for mares in the Autumn.

Relating to a review of the
Group 3 ANGST 1600m:
This looked the idea race for Dixie Blossoms and that's how it turned out.
This was run at a genuine fast tempo which made it a tough mile for the mares.
Dixie Blossoms had the best form and was the best miler which under the set weights and penalties scale, was always going to prove the one to beat. Kerrin McEvoy timed his run to perfection.
Stablemate Daysee Doom had to do some early work from the outside gate but Andrew Adkins found a handy trailing position on the outside of Savapinski. Good ride for second prize.
Zenalicious for Tim Clark hit the line hard but her final 600m (34.72 secs) was still a touch slower than the winner's 34.69.
Dawn Wall disappointed,
Shazee Lee found trouble in the straight but wasn’t going well enough,
Savapinski stuck on bravely considering she was racing well outside of her grade.
Savapinski from a good draw went forward and settled one pair back on the fence in fourth spot travelling a couple lengths off the pacemakers. She stayed in this position and made her run along the fence in the inferior ground. At the 200m she was challenging for third but Tim Clark brought home Zenalicious from the back of the field down the centre and grabbed third and Savapinski safely held out the balance of the field.
Savapinski is a half-sister to Multifacets a Gr2 placed winner of 4 races and 5 placings from 1500m – 2000m and $202,000 in earnings.
Blackbookers: Dixie Blossoms and her stablemate Daysee Doom most likely head to the 1600m Myer Classic on 4 November and they'll run well again.
Keep an eye on Savapinski - Being a Benchmark 73 mare she has a truckload of options.
