With the barnstorming win of
SEMILLION (Shalaa x Sistonic) in the
2YO Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes at Royal Randwick last Saturday, it is timely to cast the spotlight on this
Group of Second Crop Sires in Australia and identify which Sire is punching above his weight and which stallion to avoid.
SEMILLION (Green) winning the Gr3 Kindergarten
SHALAA - Sire of Semillion
We are now well into the 2021-22 Racing Season, and halfway through the Sydney Autumn Carnival, so it is perfect to capture a snapshot of the deeds of the Second Crop Sires, those Stallions whose oldest progeny are currently 3yo’s.
This is the time of year to identify the sires
“most likely” to have an ongoing successful career at stud, as these stallions can uplift the mares they cover.
Being the best racehorse on the racetrack is no guarantee of success as a sire, nor is the pedigree page behind each sire.
It’s the intrinsic value where a stallion can deliver a higher propensity of successful progeny compared to his peers. It’s also the time to correctly identify those
“nicks” that are working well with the sire. That means simply,
“what broodmare sire” does the stallion’s progeny appear to be having better than average racetrack success with, and vice versa.
These second crop sires at this stage of the season are now well exposed. During this analysis, certain stallion’s statistical data improves significantly whilst others fade away. Its also a great time to identify those sires that progeny take a little time to develop, as they are now on a level playing field compared to sires that just get
“speedy squibs.”
Earlier this year,
DYNAMIC SYNDICATIONS purchased a variety of yearlings from a basket of sires.
Specifically, we purchased
six (6) yearlings by the following
five (5) second crop sires:
CAPITALIST, SHALAA, ASTERN, FROSTED and AMERICAN PHAROAH (2)
As of
Monday 4 April 2022, a snapshot of these
five (5) sires identified above, have proven to be successful at producing top shelf progeny to date and their progeny racetrack data is appealing:

Notes:
CAPITALIST Leading Sire by Winners / Second by Earnings. Sired plenty of 2yo’s to race so can get you to the races earlier than most. His strike rate is now improving strongly into his back end 3yo season as expected from a son of Written Tycoon
SHALAA Second by Winners / Sixth by Earnings. Doing a great job especially with 52 less starters to date. He’s a
“sleeper” improving his statistics on a weekly basis. Highly desired in the sales ring as well. Not known as precocious types, they take time to develop into their 3yo years. Appear to be getting better with age and maturity.
ASTERN Seventh by Winners / Ninth by Earnings. Doing a terrific job and on the improve which we would be wanting to see from progeny who are by a son of Medaglia d’Oro. Not to be considered as precocious, back-end 3yo’s are proving to be his assets and they will continue to be showing connections plenty as they get older.
AMERICAN PHAROAH Fifteenth by Winners / Thirteenth by Earnings. Anyone who purchased his progeny are aware that you need to be patient as they will come into their own as backend 3yo’s and be better again at 4 and 5. However he has become Mr “BP” the “quiet achiever.” A boom stallion in the Northern Hemisphere, his Southern hemisphere progeny are now making their mark. With recent Stakes Winner Seven Veils, he has 66 runners to date however has sired 2 Stakes Winners. Importantly Seven Veils is from a Redoute’s Choice mare and this nick has produced 2 winners including Seven Veils. We purchased a colt by SHALAA this year from a Redoute’s Choice mare the same “nick” as Seven Veils.
FROSTED Twelfth by Winners / Thirteenth by Earnings. Punching way above his weight, the stallion is the victim of low numbers in his breeding career which has limited the number of progeny who can get to the track. Yet from just 42 runners he’s sired 14 Winners including a stakes winner.
We correctly believed that progeny by these Sires would give us the best opportunity to achieve racetrack success. Then they needed to be well related both Genetically and Commercially. Then they had to have excellent conformation, athleticism, size, strength, scope, then pass Vet Inspection with Clean X-rays and a Grade 1 endoscopic evaluation.
