Australia’s leading Sire SO YOU THINK had another super weekend claiming a Stakes Winning double.
Already the sire of
471 individual winners,
Coolmore’s So You Think (by High Chaparral) capped off a remarkable month in April, bringing his total to
40 Stakes Winners and 30 Stakes Placegetters by producing
two new stakes winners:
ILLATION (3 c ex Pontiana by Redoute’s Choice)
REGARDSMAREE (5 g ex Rossa Mia by Testa Rossa)
So You Think begins the month of May
$400,000 in front of
I Am Invincible in the
Australian General Sires Premiership after he bolstered his lead thanks to
ILLATION winning the
HC Nitschke Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Morphettville and
REGARDSMAREE winning the
Anniversary Vase (Listed, 1400m) at Sandown.
Such is his
dominance at stud this season,
So You Think has sired nine Australian stakes-winners this season alone from 126 Individual winners with earnings over $16.5 million placing him at the
pinnacle of the
Australian General Sires List.
Coolmore announced last week that
So You Think’s Service Fee would be lifted to
$93,500 (inc GST) in 2022, up from
$77,000 (inc GST) in 2021 which itself was up from
$38,500 (Inc GST) in 2020.
So You Think at $93,500 is still the Best Value Sire at the elite end of the market, with his peers I AM INVINCIBLE ($275,000), SNITZEL ($220,000), ZOUSTAR ($198,000) and WRITTEN TYCOON ($165,000).
ILLATION 3 c So You Think (NZ) - Pontiana by Redoute's Choice
HC NITSCHKE STAKES Listed SAJC, SA
$107,250 3yo Open Set Weight with Penalties 1400 1:23.39 Soft
2 starts: 2, 0, 0 & $77,450
So You Think has had a lot of exciting stakes-winners this season, but none more impressive than undefeated colt
Illation, who turned the Listed SAJC HC Nitchske Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville into a procession.
So You Think’s exciting son raced away to a very easy win at just his second start - equally as impressive when bolting in at debut.
Prepared by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, Illation broke his maiden on debut with a soft win at Pakenham on April 14 and went straight into this Black Type assignment at just his second start.
A homebred for GPI Racing who passed him in for $450,000 at the 2020 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale,
Illation became stakes winner number 39 for his in-form Coolmore Stud-based sire.
A full brother to Gr1 Randwick Guineas winner Inference and half-brother to the dual Group-winning New Zealand galloper Dragon Leap (Pierro), Illation is out of the Group 2-placed Pontiana (Redoute's Choice).
Pontiana is a daughter of the Listed Morphettville Guineas winner Liberty Rose (Royal Academy {USA}), dam of the Listed Crawford S. winner Grand Jardin (Redoute's Choice) from the family of the Group 3 winners Kanzan (Commands) and Ranier (Lonhro).
Illation is the 14th So You Think stakes winner line-bred to Northern Dancer's legendary son Nijinsky.
Is ILLATION a Cox Plate contender?
Mick Price believes Illation might be a star of the future after his near four-length win in the HC Nitschke Stakes.
So much so, the trainer already harbours dreams of getting him to a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) later this year.
“I would put a circle around the Cox Plate if you ask me, that dream which I do have at 1am in the morning sometimes,’’ Price told Racing.com.
“We’ll be setting some good plans for the spring of his four-year-old year. He’s a really good colt. I thought this was not the most suitable race for him from barrier one but you saw his turn of foot to get him out of jail and that’s what we were hoping for.
"The question is, what to do with him now? I don’t really want to be putting a colt like that in the paddock, he does already think he is a bull, so I need to be a bit careful how we spell him.”
Illation would not be the first Nitschke Stakes winner to make it to a Cox Plate in the same year, with 2007 heroine
Devil Moon (King Cugat) finishing fifth to El Segundo (Pins), a start after winning the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

It has been a good week for connections of
Regardsmaree (So You Think), eight days earlier he was the Winner of the rich VOBIS Gold Sprint and last weekend breaking through for his first stakes victory.
Purchased for $70,000 at the 2018 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale,
Regardsmaree was hot on the heels of
Illation to become the
40th stakes winner for his sire and the
second of the day for So You Think.
Bred on the same
So You Think (NZ) (High Chaparral)/Testa Rossa (Perugino) (Danzig) cross as the Group 3 winner
Dirty Thoughts, Regardsmaree is out of the unraced Rossa Mia (Testa Rossa), half-sister to the G2 Autumn Classic winner Stokehouse (Anabaa) and the Listed Blue Diamond Preview winner Malasun (Red Ransom).
Regardsmaree carries three strains of the terrific mare Fairy Bridge (USA) (Bold Reason) via her sons Sadler's Wells (USA) (Northern Dancer), Perugino (USA) (Danzig) and Fairy King (USA) (Northern Dancer).
Does Gr1 Goodwood beckon for Regardsmaree?
The in-form
Regardsmaree, who made it two wins in seven days in the Anniversary Vase, could tackle the
Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville later this month under an audacious plan being hatched by trainer Nick Ryan.
Sent out as the favourite for the Listed contest after his win in the VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) at Caulfield last week,
Regardsmaree scored by a half-length over Buffalo River (Noble Mission) in testing conditions.
"We love him on the back-up and obviously we wouldn't have run him today if we didn't think he was well," Ryan said. "But he was hard-fit, and we might have an exciting three weeks coming up. We might keep him fresh and go to Adelaide for the Goodwood."
Regardsmaree is the 15th So You Think stakes winner line-bred to Northern Dancer's legendary son Nijinsky.
In 2022 Team Dynamic purchased a sensational SO YOU THINK Colt
We have unearthed one Gem of a COLT.
He’s by super the super sire SO YOU THINK from the mare NOWHERETOSOMEWHERE (by Danehill Dancer).
He really captured our attention, and when
our vet Dr Tim Roberts gave us the report that the colt was
Low Risk on X-Ray and had a Grade 1 Scope, this
flawless colt was firmly in our sights.
OUR COLT - SO YOU THINK ex NOWHERETOSOMEWHERE
From a Broodmare who was placed at 1400m and is by the
sensational sire DANEHILL DANCER, a champion sire in his own right, that is the right way to start.
But wait ….. There’s more !
Our Colt is very closely related to these
Stakes Horses who are
both males by So You Think appearing in the
female pedigree:
POLAND (c So You Think (NZ)). 2 wins at 1400m, $186,300, in 2020-21, MRC Autumn S., Gr 2, VRC Rendr Trophy, 3d ATC Carbine Club S., Gr 3.
Kaching (g So You Think (NZ)). 4 wins 1400m to 1600m, $184,890, 2d MRC Blue Star Print H., 3d MVRC Bill Stutt S., Gr 2.
That’s great! But the best is yet to come!
Our Colt’s 2nd Dam (grand-mother) is SONGSTAR – who was placed at 1300m and 1400m, is a
daughter of
World Champion Sire - GALILEO.
SONGSTAR is a Half-Sister to the absolute champion racemare – SUNLINE (by Desert Sun).
She was crowned:
Australian Horse of the Year 3-times.
NZ Horse of the Year 4-times.
Champion NZ 3YO.
Champion NZ 4YO Miler &
Champion Australian 4YO+ on 3-occasions.
SUNLINE recorded 32 wins, 9 seconds, 3 thirds, and $11,351,607 with 13 Gr1 victories including the Cox Plate - twice, Doncaster H.,- twice, All-Aged S.,- twice, Coolmore Classic - twice, Waikato Draught Sprint - twice.
Whilst
2nd Dam SONGSTAR is also the half-sister to
SUNNY SONG – Dam of the
Stakes-Placed SUN SONG, and she has produced
4 Stakes Horses including Stakes Winners; POLAND (by SO YOU THINK) and
SUPREME PROFIT (by Encosta de Lago) and also
Stakes Placed; KACHING (by SO YOU THINK) and
ZOMBIE DANCER (by Encosta De Lago).
What we did know prior to commencing sale inspections, and what drove us to inspect the colt in the first instance was this Colt’s amazing Genetic Rating Scores of:
Enick A+++
Geonick A+++
Quality Rating Q7.
Genetically, this was the
“equal highest rating” in the whole
Inglis Classic catalogue, and we inspected all the others with this same rating score and to our eye
this Colt was clearly the standout on conformation, size and scope.
BELOW - See the Colt paraded by the Vendor
Inglis Classic Lot 118 - So You Think x Nowheretosomewhere colt from Dynamic Syndications on Vimeo.
Adam Watt from Dynamic having done all our due diligence work, was watching the colt parade just before he was set to enter the salering when
leading Victorian trainer and Dynamic Syndications Team Member Mick Price tapped Adam on the shoulder and asked,
“are you looking at the same colt as me?”
When Adam confirmed that we were keen on
Lot 118, Mick and Adam quickly compared notes and ceiling price values. Mick had a slightly larger budget than us, so Mick suggested we join forces as opposed to bidding against one another. Adam confirmed that was the right tactic and that Dynamic would bid to our limit and buy the colt if we could, but if it went beyond our ceiling price, then Mick would take over the bidding.
In one of those rare moments in a salering, the colt we had both desired, Lot 118, offered by PARSONS CREEK, fell through the cracks, and was knocked down to Dynamic Syndications to our bid of just $70,000.
Inglis Classic - Lot 118 - So You Think x Nowheretosomewhere colt (Auction Video) from Dynamic Syndications on Vimeo.
Both Adam and Mick were delighted with the purchase price. The fact is, $70,000 was then the stallions Service Fee and is just two-times his 2019 conception Service Fee of $35,000.
Now in 2022 he will stand at
$93,500 Service Fee - and here we have the
proven individual for
significantly less than what it now costs to
breed a mare to the sire!
We had
valued the colt at
3.5 to 4 times Conception Service Fee, whilst
Mick Price had valued the colt even higher.
Mick was determined to have this colt in his stable, and we were determined to have the colt under our ownership team, so it is a
true win-win situation.
This was an awesome result that we now can pass onto our loyal Dynamic Owners to race this Colt with MICK PRICE & MICK KENT (Jnr).
Lot 118 - Mick Price and Adam Watt.mp4 from Dynamic Syndications on Vimeo.
Being bred the way this colt has been, he is not one to aim at the speedy squib early 2yo races.
This is a colt for the Classic Races such as the majors: Australian Guineas, Caulfield Guineas, Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and potentially even a crack at the Derbies as a 3yo and then at races like the Epsom and the Doncaster as an older horse.
This cross is highly successful hence its outstanding genetic rating scores.
