Dynamic Syndications Ciaron Maher trained 3yo filly UP TO MISCHIEF (Written Tycoon x More Mischievous) has extended her unbeaten record to 3 Wins from 3 Runs with an easy romp around Orange on Friday in a Showcase meeting, when second-up from a spell. She was far too classy for her peers in the Benchmark 66 over 1310m.
Selected as the “Best Bet” of the day by The Daily Telegraph’s Shayne O‘Cass, and smashed in betting to start odds-on at $1.90, our Dynamic filly didn’t let her Owners (nor Shayne) down, with not much more effort than an exercise gallop for the $15,000 first prize cheque, winning Race 8, the Diggermate Orange, Benchmark 66 Hcp, ridden by Keegan Latham.
UP TO MISCHIEF being educated by Shane Rose
A promising filly we expect capable of rising through her grades, the Orange race was identified as a final foundation / education race ahead of a Winter campaign.
She is a filly that has thrived away from the hustle and bustle of Ciaron’s Warwick Farm city-based stables after being transferred to their Bong Bong rural private training facility at Moss Vale.
UP TO MISCHIEF as a yearling
She enjoys being able to get out of her box for a few hours each day into a small paddock and that has reduced her stress level which is seen through her impressive wins to date.
Taking her through country grades was a deliberate stepping process to keep her happy and healthy and not to over stress, to keep her learning her craft without the pressures of a city stable routine. We have learnt a lot about the filly as she has progressed and feel confident that there is plenty of upside.
A horse that has been a slower maturing type, UP TO MISCHIEF won her Maiden at Canberra in October 23, and we chose to give her a short break to mature and strengthen further and not get to the bottom of her in that first prep.
We resumed her from a spell at Mudgee on 31 March over 1100m in a Class 1, where she romped-in. Then on Friday she jumped up significantly in grade to a Benchmark 66, over 1310m against the older horses and the males and again was far too strong.
That's now 3 starts: 3 wins and $42,150.
It’s a big effort for any horse to rise through grades quickly, especially for a 3yo filly taking on the older horses and the males. All she can do is defeat those she has been placed against, and she has achieved this.
At Orange, she looked well-placed but was taking on genuine old, tough, bush and provincial class horses with multiple wins and on a sex basis she was poorly weighted as a filly against some of the older males. For example females should get 2.0kgs off the males, for the sex bias. However, the third placed horse Feirme Prince carried 56.5kgs so she had to give that runner weight and met that runner 2.5kgs worse than under set wights conditions. Several of the runners had won either 7 races, 6 races, 4 races etc.
So for a 3yo filly to jump up from Class 1 grade to Benchmark 66 grade is a massive leap yet she won with ease in a slick 1:16.65.
1st Up To Mischief (3yo f) 57.0kgs ($1.90) won by 1.82 lengths over 2nd De Forerunner (5yo g) (61.0kgs)($4.40), with 3rd Feirme Prince (5yo g)(56.5kg) ($6.50) 2.15 lengths.
From the time the gates crashed back, the race was as good as over as UP TO MISCHIEF from barrier 2 speared to the front and then took hold to sit at the girth of Decker from barrier 1 who was mad keen on holding the lead and the fence.
This allowed Keegan the opportunity to drop his hands and allow our filly to bowl along in a rhythm, with something to follow, conserving energy until the point of the home turn whilst the runner-up and third placed horses were one pair back stalking our filly.
As the field turned for home, UP TO MISCHIEF pushed up and went to the lead, and at the 200m dashed clear, with only the runner-up trying to go with our filly.
At the 100m UP TO MISCHIEF kicked strongly and the race was over, allowing Keegan the opportunity to ease down the final 50m to the post and cruise past the flash of the camera.
JOB DONE!
Post-race Keegan reported to our owners:
KEEGAN LATHAM gives a post-race report
“She’s got a great attitude, she does everything you want as a ride. She really launched out of the barriers, I didn’t anticipate being that close, but she obviously had that much more ability than the other horses in that race. She put herself there, I didn’t want to lead because she is still a bit inexperienced, so I just came back, elected to let the horse drawn inside to go and at least have a horse to follow around the hill and down into the straight. She put them away quickly, and then she just played with her ears the whole way up the straight. She was a little bit lost, but she has obviously got that intelligence she knows not to give herself an absolute gut buster. She knows she’s won, and then she enjoys it. A very nice filly going forward, and I hope you all have a bit of fun with her.”

UP TO MISCHIEF recorded a Winning Double on the Day at ORANGE for our DYNAMIC / CIARON MAHER Team, having won earlier in the Day with PIGGYBACK in Race 4. Noting PIGGYBACK was The Daily Telegraph’s Next Best Bet on the Card – and Shanye O’Cass told the punters his best way of punting on the day was to take an All Up – PIGGYBACK ($2.40) into UP TO MISCHIEF ($1.90) = $5.30 for the double! Well done Shayne!
UP TO MISCHIEF was our 49th RACE WIN for the current Racing Season and our 877th Race Win overall.
This was the third win in 3 starts this week for Dynamic Syndications trained by the Ciaron Maher Team.
ONWARDS and UPWARDS!
