Dynamic Syndications 2yo Filly THORSBORNE who had an easy time of it but still trialled very well this morning finishing 2.9 lengths from the winner in a good effort and in good time compared against the 10 heats on the morning, especially against the 5 fillies’ heats.
Today was
Throsborne’s first visit to the trial track and she had to come across town from Gerald Ryan’s Rosehill stables to Randwick in peak hour traffic and then, lobbing into new surroundings, there was the hype and the noise, so the experience of today’s trial will be exceptionally advantageous for our filly.
She jumped away well and just seemed to baulk before pushing forward to land one pair behind a wall of 3 in front of her. This was terrific learning curve for racecraft experience, as this was the first time she was back in behind runners, having soil and grass thrown up into her face.
She was about 4-5 lengths back off the speed as they turned for home, however she tried hard, making good ground to finish just on the back of the leading quartet. The first 4 across the line you could have thrown a blanket over, as they finished in a competitive bunch with the official time of 49.74 secs for 840m and the margin being a Neck x Head and there would have been a half a length to 4th position and 1.5 lengths to our filly.
We were very happy with her effort especially when we took into account that we carried at least 2.0kgs or more than those who finished in front of her because Hugh Bowman is a heavyweight rider. And the other riders who finished in front can ride on the limit.
Then when Hugh Bowman returned, we became even more upbeat as he reported in.
Hugh said in his opinion, ”she was Saturday Class and we should look to taking her to the races as soon as possible” (after the first few weeks go past).
He advised Adam and Gerald that he (Hugh) cost us a length at the start, not the filly, as he slipped back in the saddle and that made Throsborne unbalanced which stopped her being closer on settling and possibly leading the trial.
Hugh advised us that "when asked, she mustered good speed and she tries really hard."
His feeling was "she is be a natural 2yo and we should take advantage of her precociousness where possible."
Gerald was also delighted with the filly’s effort knowing how much improvement she still has available to her with education, fitness, experience.
A day is a long time in this business and we will not be sure until she gets home and cools right down, if she will pull up shinsore or survives the experience unscathed. Only Mother Nature can answer that and she’s not talking at the moment. We will know significantly more in the next 24 – 48 hours.
Going forward, if Thorsborne is feeling her shins, she will need a spell to allow her to get the shins to settle down.
If she pulls up well, our plan is to go back to the spelling paddock for 7-10 days to let her unwind, get over any muscle soreness and get out to walk around in the paddock of a day with the sun on her back and her head down grazing. Then she will return to Gerald’s stables.
Our aim is to sidestep the first 3 weeks of the 2yo season, where there is a race each Saturday at Randwick. Then on the 25th October and 1 November there is a 2yo race at Rosehill over 1100m each day. We would be aiming to run in one of these. Then the races go back to Randwick over 1000m on the 8th which we will sidestep and then, on the 15 November there is another race at Rosehill which we would aim at.
This would give us 2 race starts on her home track over 1100m. She would have the fitness in her to run the 1100m trip. Also she is on her home track where she trains each day. There is no float trip involved and at the 1100m, the speedy squibs run out of puff the last 100m.
As a Yearling
As stated, with young horses a day is a long time. They can mentally turn off and go sour. They can physically not respond to the training regimes and go sore, they can get a virus or can go shinsore.
It’s seldom the best 2yo that wins these pre-Christmas 2yo races but rather, the rather - the best educated. She would be competitive on what she has shown on the training tracks, jump outs and barrier trial. With a mental and physical short term break of 7-10 days now we will be putting ourselves and Throsborne into the best position to be competitive later on.
