Many people are often left scratching their head when people talk about “BOBS” but it is an advantage that where applicable, benefits all owners.
The Racing NSW Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme (BOBS) has been operating since 2002 and owners have been reaping the benefits ever since.
In the 2010-11 racing season almost $8 million was paid out in cash bonuses and another $2m in Double-Up vouchers, bringing the total since the scheme’s inception to almost $58 million in extra money for owners.
Not all horses are eligible for BOBS.
To be eligible a racehorse must be sired by a NSW-based stallion for which the Stallion Nomination Fee has been paid.
That stallion’s progeny may then be advertised or sold as weanlings or yearlings as “BOBS eligible.”
Other states have similar schemes including VOBIS in Victoria and QTIS in Queensland among the most notable.
With BOBS, Owners are then required to nominate the horse for a fee.
The horse may then win bonus prize money of up to $20,000 for each win on NSW tracks (except Group and Listed races) during its 2YO and 3YO seasons.
Dynamic Syndications horses have been great beneficiaries of the bonus scheme this season with Secret Delight winning $30,000 in BOBS bonuses to date and Full Blast adding $10,000 due to the scheme.

There is an additional scheme called BOBS Extra in NSW allowing nominated horses to win bonuses of up to $20,000 by winning events over at 1600 metres and longer, from the day the horse turns 4YO until the date of its retirement.
The other concept that Racing NSW has developed allows owners who win a BOBS bonus to double its value.
By electing to take a voucher rather than a cash payment, they can double the full amount towards the purchase of another BOBS eligible horse.
In 2010-11 a total of $2.5m was provided for Double-Up vouchers and each syndicate member makes an individual claim.
The voucher may only be used to buy a BOBS eligible horse at a yearling sale, or to fund a share in a syndicated BOBS eligible horse which has been purchased at auction, is unraced and for which a Double-Up voucher was not used in the original purchase.
These initiatives put in place by Racing NSW for the benefit of both NSW Breeder and Owners have been extremely well received and appreciated since its inception.
Dynamic nominates all of its horses for the appropriate schemes when possible to ensure that our clients get a chance for higher returns when their horses win races.
As mentioned previously, Secret Delight has won $30,000 worth of BOBS which means she has earned just shy of $90,000 in her three race starts compared to the $59,550 if she was not BOBS eligible.
