Steven Bradbury won a Winter Olympics Gold Medal and at Rosehill on Saturday,
ELABORATE pulled off a
"Bradbury Like" win to claim an
unexpected victory in Rosehill Race 9, the Quayclean Handicap
ELABORATE claims his 5th Race Win at Rosehill on Saturday
A Benchmark 78 Handicap over 1400m. The track was rated a
Heavy 10 and they ran
1:27.08 coming home their last 600m in
0:37.71.
On Friday afternoon there was 18 Acceptances for the race and
ELABORATE was one of
two Dynamic Syndications stablemates in the event, he was alongside
GREEK HERO which we decided to scratch.
ELABORATE a noted
2400m staying prospect, was ready to resume his campaign as we aim to have him ready mid-January to aim at the
Magic Millions Stayers Cup over 2400m.
Adam Watt spoke with Richard Freedman over a week ago, well before nominations, suggesting that we should take advantage of the
3.0kg claim of promising
apprentice Tom Sherry, to make the resumption race slightly less taxing. As it turned out, this would be a
masterstroke.
"Beat Ya" ELABORATE wins
Despite the forecast of Heavy rain during the day and the prospect of a bottomless Heavy 10 track and a chopped-up surface being last use on the day, we would have preferred not to have raced first-up on this track surface, because the pressure of a 1400m event in a big field may be too much without a solid base fitness in him.
ELABORATE digs deep to fend off Stockman
However, time was running out, we had to get started as our target is 10 weeks away.
We certainly were hopeful to run well and expected him to do his best and as we declared to the Owners on Friday afternoon, anything was possible
“Steven Bradbury won a Gold Medal.”
Things certainly changed over the next 24 hours. The rain came, the track was in awful condition by race 9, the biggest change was half the field were now scratched. So, a field of 18 was reduced down to a field of 9 by start time.
Of those that were remaining, the speed map showed 4 of these would want to lead.
The conditions by race 9 required a true stayer would be needed, who could run what was more like a mile than a seven-furlong dash.
Apprentice Tom Sherry chatted with trainer Richard Freedman before being legged-up, who advised that the horse was well but not fit yet, so don’t get in a speed battle. Just get back, take your time, and be the widest runner in the straight to ensure he doesn’t get any mud and flying clods in his face. With Tom’s 3.0kg claim, being so well-weighted we expected our Dynamic Duo to run well and pick up some ground in the straight.
As the gates crashed back,
the race panned out 100% for ELABORATE to score a remarkable
“Bradbury Like” Win.
Jumping away on terms, there was a charge upfront for the lead which played out perfectly for us. Tom got
ELABORATE to settle back towards the tail in 7th position one off the fence about 6 lengths off the leaders after the first 2 furlongs.
Passing the 800m, Tom had
ELABORATE in a lovely rhythm and just peeled off two even sectional splits until they swung for home.
As they entered the straight with 400m to run, Tom angled out to beyond the centre of the track but was still in eight position some 7 lengths off the leaders.
We were hopeful at that stage to finish off but as
ELABORATE would start to tire, he could still beat a few home.
As we watched the final 400m unfold it was in disbelief what we were saw.
ELABORATE ranged up to pass the two horses immediately in front of him as they passed the 300m but still some 5 lengths away. Tom began riding vigorously at the 300m and with every stride
ELABORATE was responding, closing the gap.
At the 200m the favourite Zakat had hit an outright lead by 2 lengths but Tom and
ELABORATE were closing fast out wide in the better ground with eventual runner-up STOCKMAN starting to match strides from back in the ruck.
At the 100m
Elaborate was up into 4th spot, 2 lengths off the leader, and half a length in front of STOCKMAN.
At the 75m Zakat was still 2 lengths in front but he was on tired legs.
ELABORATE was out of gas and looking for the finish line on rubbery legs and Stockman was powering home.
At the 50m STOCKMAN had drawn level to eyeball
ELABORTE as Zakat who was beaten began to yield.
With 25m remaining
ELABORATE would not be denied, and he dug deep, fighting hard to claw out the lead as the superior stayer, hitting the line with a widening margin of a Head (0.2 length) in front of STOCKMAN who had his chance with Zakat finishing 2 lengths away from
ELABORATE in third spot.
Race Winner returning to the Winner's Circle
Trainer RICHARD FREEDMAN was interviewed post-race by Greg Radley.
Richard Freedman Fiona & Dean Watt - delighted with the win
“That was somewhat unexpected, I just thought that he would go out there and run like a stayer in a 1400m race but obviously the 1400m was like a 1600m race and he’s a genuine stayer and he sort of whacked home over the top of them.
“He’s obviously a bit more forward than I thought. The plan is to have him ready for the Magic Millions carnival that’s a fair way off.
“We got him going and thought we will just take him through his races and see if he gets the 2400m up there (Magic Millions). He loves a heavy track this horse, and I have not given him a lot of work and I think that actually helps him.
“I love winning a race, you never knock them back!”
Jockey Tom Sherry was interviewed by Lizzie Jelfs post-race:
Tom Sherry is Dynamic
“Mr Freedman I don’t think had much confidence in the horse today, he said it will take a run, step it up in trip, and see how it goes, but he was really tough, travelled well, he’s tough and the more I gave him a couple of taps the more he kept picking up, he’ll definitely will get further and he’s in for a nice preparation.
“The owners and trainer have been supporting me well, and I am very grateful. How good is today!”
We are excited about the preparation ahead which has been deliberately mapped to get to the Magic Millions $1m 2400m Stayers Cup and off the back of excellent form last preparation, and only a short break between preparations, he is going to give our owners some exciting times.
