WHEN PEDIGREE, PHYSICAL AND PROVEN DATA ALIGN — WE ACT
WHY WE MOVED DECISIVELY TO SECURE THE OLE KIRK x CASA TRANQUILA (NZ) BAY COLT

When we travel to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale each year, we do so with a very clear framework. We are not there to simply buy horses — we are there to identify athletes that meet a strict set of criteria: physical type, pedigree strength, proven genetic patterns, commercial viability and, importantly, the ability to give our owners a genuine opportunity to race a quality horse.
This year, one colt in particular fitted that brief from the moment we inspected him.
The OLE KIRK x CASA TRANQUILA (NZ) Bay Colt, offered by Gerry Harvey’s Westbury Farm, stood out as the type of horse we are always searching for — an athletic, precocious individual bred on a pedigree that is already delivering results at the highest level.
Physically, he is everything we look for in an early-running colt. He is short coupled, well balanced and naturally athletic, with a fluent, efficient action and a strong overstep. Watching him walk, you see a horse that moves like a natural sprinter. He gives the clear impression of a colt built for speed and precocity, the sort of profile that can be up and running as a two-year-old and competitive in sprint distances around 1200 metres.
That physical profile alone made him a serious candidate. But the deeper we analysed his pedigree, the more compelling the case became.
His sire, Ole Kirk, was a Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and a dual Group 1 winner, capturing both the Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas. He possessed a rare blend of speed and class, and importantly, he is already proving capable of passing those qualities on to his progeny.

Ole Kirk has made an exceptional start to his stud career, earning Champion First Season Sire honours and producing stakes performers from limited early runners. When a young stallion begins his career with that level of impact, the market responds quickly, and breeders and buyers take notice. Momentum in a young sire is a powerful indicator, and Ole Kirk has it in abundance.
On the dam’s side, the colt is out of Casa Tranquila (NZ), a granddaughter of the outstanding broodmare sire More Than Ready through his son Pluck. More Than Ready has long been recognised as one of the most influential broodmare sires in the Australian Stud Book, and his daughters continue to produce high-class performers across a wide range of sire lines.
Casa Tranquila herself comes from a deep and consistent female family that has produced multiple winners and high-quality performers over several generations. Families that repeatedly produce runners with durability and competitiveness are invaluable, and this pedigree carries exactly that kind of depth.

One of the strongest reasons we targeted this colt, however, lies in the proven success of the Written Tycoon sire line over More Than Ready-line mares. This is not a theoretical mating or an experimental pattern — it is a cross that has already produced outstanding racehorses, including Group 1 winners and stakes performers with impressive strike rates.
When analysing yearlings, we place enormous weight on repeatable patterns of success. Breeding is not guesswork when the data consistently points in one direction. The Written Tycoon and More Than Ready combination has demonstrated that it works with 8 Stakes Winners and Ole Kirk is already continuing that trend with his own progeny.
In other words, this colt is bred on a formula that has been tested and proven.
Of course, pedigree and physical type are only part of the equation. Every horse we purchase must also pass a rigorous veterinary assessment before we will proceed.
Our long-time consulting veterinarian, Dr Tim Roberts, who has more than five decades of experience in the thoroughbred industry, applies a simple but uncompromising philosophy: if in doubt, rule it out.

Each horse undergoes a comprehensive physical examination. If the colt satisfies that stage, all x-rays are reviewed in detail. Only after passing those steps does the endoscopic video assessment take place to confirm full and proper respiratory function. It is only when a horse satisfies all three criteria that we consider it suitable to purchase. Transparency is important to us, and a full copy of the veterinary report is always made available to our owners.
This colt met every requirement.
There is another factor that gives us enormous confidence in this horse — the involvement of Gerry Harvey. As breeder and vendor, Gerry has elected to retain a 50% share in the colt to race in partnership with our team.

Decisions like that are never made lightly. When a breeder of his experience and success chooses to stay in a horse, it is a powerful endorsement of both the pedigree and the individual.
The colt will be trained by Ciaron Maher, whose stable has been Australia’s leading training operation for three consecutive seasons.

Maher’s record in developing young horses and managing quality sprinters is second to none, and his resources, systems and staff provide every horse in the stable with the best possible opportunity to reach its potential.
When you step back and look at the complete picture, it becomes clear why we acted decisively to secure this colt.
He is by a Champion First Season Sire whose trajectory is sharply upward.
He is bred on a pedigree cross that has already produced elite racehorses.
He comes from a deep and reliable female family.
He is a precocious, athletic colt built for speed.
He has passed a stringent veterinary selection process.
He will be trained by Australia’s leading stable.
And he will be raced in partnership with one of the most respected breeders in the industry.
Very few yearlings can bring all of those elements together.
For our owners, this represents more than simply buying a share in a horse. It is the opportunity to be involved in a colt selected through careful analysis, professional judgement and a disciplined purchasing philosophy — the same approach that has guided our team for many years.

We believe this OLE KIRK x CASA TRANQUILA (NZ) Bay Colt is exactly the type of horse our clients want to race: athletic, well bred, professionally selected and placed in the right hands from day one.
